Bunker shots don't have to be scary, the problem for most amateurs is they're fighting the club rather than letting it do the work.
Your wedge has bounce on it for a reason. It stops the club digging into the sand and lets it glide through instead. With my lob wedge, I spin the grip a couple of mills to the right, retake my grip and set up nice and wide like a driver stance.
I get asked this all the time - what age should a kid start playing golf?
My answer is as soon as possible. Driving ranges are great for little ones because there are no members around who feel like they're being held up. Get them down there from 18 months, two years old, let them have a swing and just enjoy it.
