MY TOP FIVE DIET AND NUTRITION TIPS 🍽️
Whether you want to build muscle, gain weight, lose body fat or maintain where you are, these are five things I’d encourage you to think about…
1️⃣ You need to enjoy what you eat!
Enjoying food and drink is a massive part of life. If your approach makes you miserable, how sustainable is it going to be?
There’s no point forcing down an egg white omelette you can barely stomach. Love cottage cheese? Great, it can be useful! Hate every mouthful? Find an alternative.
You can work towards your goals while eating food you actually look forward to. That’s what we’re aiming for.
2️⃣ Learn about nutrition — give yourself some freedom.
This is why I call my sessions Diet Education sessions. People can have great success with programmes such as Slimming World, but I want you to understand the basics behind your choices.
For weight loss, the common principle is a calorie deficit. Understanding calories and macros - protein, carbohydrates and fat — helps you see how your food fits your goals.
I often recommend learning to use an app such as MyFitnessPal. There are other similar apps and tracking isn’t essential or for everyone, but even a short spell can be an eye-opener. It can help you spot patterns and make adjustments with less guesswork.
The aim is to build confidence for real life: eating out, parties, holidays and Christmas included!
3️⃣ Don’t slash the other three tyres! 🚗
When you get a puncture, you don’t walk around your car and slash the other three tyres, do you?
So, if you’re tempted by a McDonald’s or a doughnut, or have a meal that isn’t exactly in line with your goals, there’s no need to think “I’ve blown it now” and eat rubbish for the rest of the day.
You can absolutely turn the day around. Just get back to your normal meals — no need to starve yourself to make up for it. And if the whole day goes off plan? Get straight back on that horse the next day. Don’t wait until Monday!
Successful people aren’t people who never go off track. They’re people who keep getting back on it.
And that’s all you’ve got to do: get back on it.
4️⃣ Keep it simple, and repeat what works.
You don’t need fancy recipes or a different meal every day. Meals made from a few straightforward ingredients can be enjoyable, satisfying and easier to track.
If you find something that’s easy to make, fits your goals, fills you up AND tastes good, why not have it several times that week? Keep some variety across your diet, but there’s no need to reinvent dinner every night!
Make a little list of breakfasts, lunches and dinners that work for you. Then, when you’re staring into the fridge thinking “What shall I eat?”, you’ve already got some answers.
5️⃣ My personal favourite: get the slow cooker out!
I love mine. My current regulars are Chilli Con Carne and Chinese Chicken Curry. Easy to batch cook, easy to pack with vegetables, and lovely to have ready for another meal.
And yes, if you watch my stories, you’ll know l eat this stuff for breakfast. NOT essential, but, it'll work wonders in taking you towards your goals than a bowl of cereals or slice of toast ever will.
Coming home starving is much easier to handle when you know there’s something decent ready to warm up. It can make that last-minute takeaway a lot less tempting!
