Westwood Wanderers FC

A nice run out for both Westwood Wanderers Ballers and Mavericks this morning but it just happened to be against each other. Time to play for bragging rights!!

Was a good game and understandably the Ballers had a lot of possession considering they have been playing together for many years now and at a higher level. However the Mavericks really showed up second half and scored some good goals. They will improve with more games under their belts no doubt. Over all a great morning for both teams.

CHAMPIONS of the UK SPORTS COACHING Tournament. 🏆🏆🏆

After the sad passing of coach Mamzi’s dad and our Isa’s granddad, today was all about winning the tournament for coach Mamzi and Isa!!!

It was a very early start this morning as the Westwood Wanderers FC Ballers travelled over to Hazel Grove in Cheshire for the UK SPORTS COACHING Tournament.

The lads started off inconsistently by winning their opening match, but closely followed it with a defeat to Marple Athletic. The third match was a convincing 4-1 win against Stalybridge Celtic FC, but once again the final league match resulted in a defeat to Stockport Cosmos FC. But luckily we were still able to progress through to the knockout phase of the tournament. The inconsistency was put down to the grass pitch, and not quite getting a grip with the bounce of the ball on the grass pitch. But nonetheless the lads were determined and didn’t want to go back home empty handed.

The lads encouraged each other and went back to playing simple control possession based football and it paid off!!

In the semi finals we faced Stalybridge Celtic FC again, the compusure and drive resulted in a convincing 2-0. The final was Westwood Wanderers FC Ballers vs Marple Athletic FC, one of the teams who we had lost to earlier in the tournament. But this time round the lads were ready and focused, it was time for revenge but we all knew it wasn’t going to be easy!! It was an end to end competitive match but there was no break through for either team. Resulting on Salah and Nabil being sent on as substitutes in the second half. The tactical battle continued until the decisive decision was made to move Salah into defence and Symeon out of defence and into the wing.. and it worked a treat!! A clever ball to Symeon enabled him to go on a blistering driving run past 2 players and into the box, but there was no stopping him as he took aim and fired in a bullet into the top right hand corner of the goal to give us the lead, with only a few minutes to go!! But this time round there was no comeback for Marple, as the Ballers went on to win the match and be crowned champions of the UK SPORTS COACHING Tournament.

A huge well done to all the lads as it was a huge learning curve, having to play on grass in such a long time!!

tournament and very unlucky not to come away Champions.

What an evening of celebrations at the Westwood Wanderers FC Presentation Evening!! It was a fun packed evening of padel, laughter and celebrations!!

It wasn’t just about the players!! We took the opportunity to acknowledge and recognise our amazing volunteers, who give their time and effort for the love of the club and never ask for anything back in return!!

So the Club Recognition Awards was our way of saying thank you!!
