Well that's a wrap on a very busy weekend!

We headed off to the other side of the Peak District for what will be our penultimate WE comp of the year. A full on day as it was a Regional (1 day) show, and Honey came too 🀩 Her first WE comp!

So with Honey in the Novice, I decided it was about time Twig stepped up to try the Inter B 🫣 Nothing to lose, & it's all good practice. He hasn't got his changes installed yet so we knew our limitations but it's always nice to have a benchmark.

Both ponies were ace, I'm not sure Honey was bargaining for 3 rounds but she was quite keen about this speed stuff πŸ˜…πŸ˜³ Twig was an excellent buddy as he is always cool as anything.

Honey managed to earn a creditable 6th & most importantly, complete everything!! Winter homework includes curbing some of the enthusiasm somewhat 🀣
Twig meanwhile excelled himself with a win in his first Inter B! Still with plenty of homework mind. I know this next year is gonna be a tough one! πŸ™ˆ

They've definitely both earned their sweeties & a day off now 🍬πŸ₯•πŸ˜

Something a bit different today 😍
It feels like it's been a long time. Because it's been a long time 🫣🀣

I wanted to be doing more by this point but the silly summer put the kibosh on most of my exciting XC plans & so here we are, finally jumping jumps on actual (green) grass. Starting small so Lils can figure this πŸ’© out without me wondering why I made these particular life choices.

Which was incredibly successful because we jumped all the jumps in the correct order, first time. We maintained a lovely - possibly slightly steady but not terrible - rhythm the entire time. Or at least until almost the last fence when the batteries started to go flat. But hey, that's ok, much better than say, half way 'round?

And most importantly, I felt like we could have done the 80, or even the 90. The only things lacking were energy (but I do believe too much energy with insufficient knowledge & experience can be a disadvantage πŸ˜…) and experience.
We have a bit more of the latter now, & can work on the former. 😊

Was nostalgic to pull out the Rascals gear even if we were solo!!
Was also very very nice to jump an actual hedge even if it was little 😁

Tomorrow the busy weekend continues with Twig & Honey off to WE!

What do you do for your finale when you have no imagination, and your 6yr old pony has no fancy tricks?

Pick bold music and let choose your outfit, then wing it and hope for the best 🀣

Plus, the hair just does it's own thing. It doesn't get out often. Yes I do sit on it frequently - it's really annoying.

And no, we didn't practice under the lights. I want funky lights at home though.

Roll on 2027... do we go back? Do we try and defend our title for the 3rd year? πŸ˜…
Do we need some funky moves before then? 😬 (Maybe)
Ultimately... do we try and nail this bloomin' freestyle business?
I actually really want to do the obstacles bridleless 🫣🀫 Goals??
What do you think?!

One way or another I'll be at because it's my favourite 😍

Taking a moment to appreciate some of the absolutely amazing photos taken by Lucy Pryor at her sunflower workshop evening 🀩

Of course, I'm a complete photo addict (on a horse anyway... alone? No chance.) so when I saw Lucy was looking, I was straight in there with my hand up saying pick meeee!
But when she said she would love me to bring Lils, I wont deny a little part of me went uh oh. Because not only is Twig my little Mr Reliable, Lils is.... less so. She then spent the two days prior making me strongly consider my life choices. πŸ˜…πŸ«£

Lilly is Lilly. Stupid statement? Maybe. I just don't generally compare her because she writes her own rules, has her own opinions, and getting to know her has meant getting to know HER, not just general expectations. Often you can call on that bank of knowledge, "ahh, this one is like that one!" 😢
No.
But anyway, in true Lilly fashion, she was, literally, golden. I still had to make the decision to trust her, and I'm glad I did.

Lucy always takes photos that are a work of art πŸ₯° but these ones are also special because of that decision to trust, to try, and to move past those difficult moments. We are what we choose to be ✨️

Tuesday's midday musing... has two parts.

No.1 - Train the horse you want to ride... and anyone else would too.
Not the one that's going to win everything. But the one you can genuinely enjoy & you are fairly sure most other people could too.
Most horses aren't going to be winners. Will they win stuff? Sure. Are they going to be in the top tier of what they do? Probably not. That's just being realistic.
Does it matter? Also probably not. Most of us like winning stuff sure, but probably prefer enjoying ourselves, having few vet bills, & having a good relationship with our horse - a horse who has limited to no hang ups.
Excellent goals.
I also don't mean just produce a horse any numpty could ride, because that is quite different, & leads me to...

No.2 - Be a rider who can ride most of the above horses.
Not that specific horse who is immune to most of the real world & is essentially a robot. Not only the ones who never spook. Not only the ones who require immesurable amounts of leg to actually move, or who can somehow survive despite a death grip on the reins.
Because whilst they are positive traits in that they are maybe allowing said human to be on a horse, that isn't riding & it certainly isn't actually a positive for the horse.
I'm not saying you have to be the rider who produces youngsters, deals with the remedial cases & wants to jump 1.60. But it shouldn't be far fetched to be a rider who can mount any quality, well trained horse & a) be inoffensive to said horse, b) get a reasonable conversation going with said horse & c) certainly not immediately cause it an issue.

I hear often from riders who are concerned about getting on GOOD horses because of fear of "wrecking" them. These people are usually fair riders with low confidence in their own ability, not necessarily bad riders.

But where has this come from? Why is it now so hard to pair reasonable riders with reasonable horses & get reasonable results?

I don't care so much about excellence. I just want to see confident horses being ridden by thoughtful, understanding riders.

Be the rider any horse would want.
Make the horse any rider would want.

A quick shoutout & thank you to Premier Performance who provided these lovely goody bags at The Horsemanship Event of The Year - Horsemanship Showcase! live competition winners 🀩

Twig is particularly excited about the treats of course, I think he may be persuaded to share some of the other supplements with his herd mates, namely Pickle & Lilly 😁 The treats? He probably deserves all of those 🧑

A little reminder as it's been cropping up a little too often for comfort recently...

As a self-employed person, if you as a client don't pay me for my services, nobody does 🫠
Therefore I don't get to pay for things for my horses. Feed. Vets. Hay. Stuff.
Screw holidays & whatnot, I don't get those 🀣

I don't want to go to a payment in advance system. And I loathe having to enforce a cancellation policy, but I am going to have to get a little firmer on cancellations within 48hrs of an event.

I like to think I'm a fairly understanding person, I get that things happen.
I also get that sometimes it's genuinely not safe to ride in ice/gale force winds/35Β° heat. I do.

But when you have someone message you at midnight to say "Oh I've seen it's raining tomorrow so I'm not going to come for my lesson." At 12 the following day... and not pay?
😩

Just please... be considerate. Not just of me, but of all professionals - I know so many people in the same boat.

And because I freaking hate moaning about this, a bloody mahoosive thank you to all of my absolutely epic clients who usually need no reminders, no asking, and are just wonderful. You know who you are (I hope!)! 🧑
