This week’s TSR post from Karl Greaves - some videos are in the comments:

Eight of us left Oxfam this morning, a touch cold at the start but soon warmed through in the sun. A refreshingly flat route out of town towards Dewsbury, and two more riders joined along the way to make a nice round ten.

Close to perfect conditions for cycling - sunshine, not too warm, no real wind to speak of. Quick rolling roads out past Barkston Ash and Church Fenton had us at the café just after 10.30, some great group riding making good time. Friendly service, though never the quickest at the aerodrome, which gave us the chance to sit in the sun and catch an unexpected Spitfire flyover ✈️.

Then the return leg: more rolling roads into Castleford, and a chance to stretch the legs along the Normanton bypass. Skirting the south edge of Wakefield brought us to Horbury Bridge and the only real climbs of the day. The route making the most of some quiet roads we don't often ride, and a selection of fancy houses around Briestfield. Being nosey made a nice distraction from the gradient 👀.

A flowing descent into town to finish, and a final stop at the Rat and Ratchet for a drink and a chat in the sun. No better way to end the final August TSR ☀️.

For this week's Traditional Sunday Ride (TSR), twelve of us set off from Oxfam this morning, a dashing dozen, with a good mix of returning and new faces. The route looked short on paper, but the Peak District is never to be underestimated.

The steady run out to the foot of Holme Moss made for a decent warm-up, already pleasant in the sun at that hour. The climb went better than expected, with not much of the headwind that had been promised. From the top we rolled down into Glossop as a group, and that was when the day showed its hand: a series of punchy climbs to test the legs. Monks Road came first, then the kinder climb out of Hayfield, which included a brief pause while Steve helped coordinate a helicopter landing 🚁.

Today's stop was The Village Kitchen, known for three things: the steps & cobbles that test anyone walking in cycling shoes, the friendly staff, and portions of cake that border on aggressive. Fast service, and a scone and a slice of cheesecake that will be talked about for some time 🍰.

Not much chance to digest before the climb out of Whaley Bridge, then the short sharp punch out of Compstall that's easy to forget until you turn the corner into it. A pause in the shade at the top for the views across Stockport and Manchester, then on to the final climb of the day out of Uppermill. Warm and sunny throughout, and staying on top of hydration took some doing ☀️.

A glorious descent into Marsden closed it out, where half the group stopped at The Riverhead to mark its 20th anniversary 🍻.

As is often the way with the Peak District, the numbers don't do justice to what the legs felt. Everyone made it round together, on some epic local roads.

A stunning summer's day to be out on the bike. Seven of us rolled out on the TSR, heading for the fan-favourite café at Cusworth Hall. The way out was a new one, climbing up through Almondbury and Farnley Tyas. Staying off the main roads made for an enjoyable start, and a fresh twist on an already good route. Two more riders joined us by the time we reached Royd Moor, and the nine of us settled into the rolling roads out towards Doncaster.

Cusworth Hall was looking regal in the sunshine, and there was fast, friendly service at the café. Sitting outside in warm weather is not something to be taken for granted ☀️.

More rolling roads as we headed back over Barnsley, picking up a similar route to last week, which meant the drag up to High Hoyland & climb out of Denby Dale again. Somehow the weather made it more enjoyable this week.

A final diversion took us to the Woodman at Thunder Bridge for a bit more time in the sun before the run home. Great route, great group. What a summer ride should be all about 👌.
