Major Tony Wade a respected businessman and a member of the renowned Wade pottery family, whose name became synonymous with the ceramics industry in North Staffordshire.

Away from business, Tony Wade supported local organisations and community life in North Staffordshire, including Newcastle (Staffs) RUFC, where he served as Club President. His association with the club reflected the long-standing links between local industry and grassroots sports, with many prominent business leaders giving their time to help community organisations flourish.

As president, he represented the club with distinction, supporting its players, volunteers and members while helping to strengthen its position within local the community. His contribution formed part of the proud tradition of leadership that has guided Newcastle (Staffs) RUFC throughout its history.

Congratulations Charlie Shaw on joining the Nottingham Trent University Performance Pathway.

Charlie is another Castle Mini and Junior member who has clearly excelled and shown great promise and ability which has resulted in this recognition.
he progressed from the colts last season and shone in his appearances in the senior side last year.

Charlie is a very talented fly half who can also play full back, his skillset is second to none.

We wish charlie all the best this coming season.

Geoff Adams was a highly respected solicitor and a long standing figure in North Staffordshire’s amateur rugby community.

Throughout his career, Geoff provided legal advice to businesses and residents across Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent, specialising in property law and advisory services. His professional knowledge proved invaluable to Newcastle (Staffs) RUFC, helping the club navigate property matters, secure community funding, and meet regulatory requirements.

He played a pivotal role in securing and developing the clubs home at Lyme Valley, helping transform it into a modern, multi pitch community sports hub.

As president, Geoff championed the clubs “One Club” philosophy, investing in the growth of the mini, junior, and academy sections to create a strong pathway for future senior men’s and women’s teams. His leadership was instrumental in helping secure the clubs long term success and sustainability.

The first president of Newcastle (Staffs) RUFC was Major Tom Simpson, a well known figure in North Staffordshire and Chairman of Simpson (Potters) Ltd in Cobridge.

Shortly after the club was founded, he was invited to become its first president and gladly accepted the role. Although he was a keen supporter of sport, he never played rugby himself. His son, Bob Simpson, was one of the clubs founding players.

Over the coming days we’ll be taking a trip down memory lane and sharing some of the history that has made our club what it is today. 🏰

Newcastle (Staffs) Rugby Club traces its origins to the early 1940s, when a group of former Newcastle High School pupils, too young for military service, played rugby while serving with the Home Guard.

After World War II, many of these players joined the reformed Stoke Rugby Club. As player numbers grew, Stoke encouraged the Newcastle based members to establish their own club. Following a meeting at the Guildhall in Newcastle in November 1947, Newcastle (Staffs) Rugby Union Football Club was officially formed, with Major Tom Simpson MC JP becoming the first club’s president.

The club initially played at Trentham before moving to Roe Lane playing fields in Newcastle, where improved facilities were provided by the Borough Council. In 1952, Newcastle became fully independent from Stoke RUFC.

Continued growth soon led to the search for a permanent home. In 1954, the club secured a lease on land at Lilleshall Road, Clayton, where it remains today. A clubhouse was built and officially opened in 1956, with further extensions completed in 1960 and formally opened by Major Tom Simpson in 1961.

• Organising home & away fixtures and pitch allocations
• Managing festival & tournament entries, deadlines and logistics
• Communicating fixture details, changes and cancellations
• Rearranging postponed matches
• Keeping club calendars and RFU Game Management System records up to date

✅ We’re looking for someone who is:
• Organised and good at managing their time
• A clear and confident communicator
• Able to handle fixture clashes and find solutions
• Comfortable using computers and online systems

This is a vital role within our M&J section and a great way to get involved and support the next generation of Newcastle rugby players.
