A healthy diet isn't one meal. Which is rather convenient because neither is an unhealthy one.

Zoom out.

Patterns matter more than individual choices.

the 80/20 approach to food is often presented as 80% "good" food and 20% "bad" food.

I don't particularly like that. Food doesn't acquire more virtue because it contains kale.

My 80% is simply the boringly useful stuff: enough protein, fruit and vegetables, fibre, regular meals and enough fuel for what I'm asking my body to do.

The other 20% doesn't need earning.

Your 80% doesn't have to look like a training plan.

Walking the dog, A fitness class. Cycling to work. Ten minutes with some weights. A stroll after dinner.

the stuff that is repeatable is often far more useful than the heroic workout you do once and hate so much that you never repeat it.

Build an ordinary life that moves.

The big hike makes the photo album. The wet wedneday walk doesn't. The finish line gets the medal. Three sets of squats don't. But those unremarkable things that I do week after week are what allow me to say yes when something more interesting comes along. Adventure is the 20%. Routine pays for it.

I don't want my healthy habits to stop me having a life. I want them to help me have one.
This month, I'm exploring the 80/20 principle across my Five Healthy Habits: Move, Nourish, Rest, Connect and Reflect.

Most of the time, I want routine that supports my wellbeing. Some of the time I want long hikes, late nights, weekends away, meals I haven't planned and adventures that thoroughly mess up the routine.
Because the point of looking after ourselves in the ordinary 80% isn't to become really good at following the rules.
It's to give ourselves the capacity to enjoy the other 20%.

I don't want to rewind the clock. I want this body - now - to be strong enough to take me places, lift things, climb hills, get off the floor and say yes to adventures.
That's what Thursday's classes are for.
We're not training to become younger. We're training for what comes next.

Confidence. Perspective. Boundaries. Curiosity. The ability to care less about things that don't matter.

There are physical changes I'd happily send back to the manufacturer. But I wouldn't swap the person I am now for a younger body.
That's worth remembering whenever the next update installs itself.

Yes, the walk counts. So does the conversation afterwards. Health isn't just heart rates, weights and step counts.
Sometimes what keeps us coming back is belonging.

One genuinely good thing about getting older? I'm increasingly convinced that who we spend our time with matters enormously.

Find the people who encourage you to go for a walk.
Who don't care how fast you are.
Who'll have coffee (and cake) afterwards.
Who make looking after yourself feel like living rather than another job.
