Oldham 21 Clitheroe 31

Oldham welcomed Clitheroe to Manor Park at the weekend for their latest fixture aiming to kickstart their league season having narrowly lost their previous two fixtures. Oldham enjoyed early pressure in Clitheroeโ€™s 22 metre area but with their set piece not firing on all cylinders wasted early chances to apply pressure. As per the last two games for Oldham they struggled to gain a foothold on the game early on with exchanges being scrappy as both sides tried to get the upper hand.

Early chances for Oldham came from a Jordan McEwan break but with the support slow to get to him the attack went astray. Another chance went begging with forwards out in the back line where a simple pass was all that was needed but poor decision making meant the chance went begging.

Clitheroe played direct rugby and were rewarded for this by continually dragging the Oldham defence in to the middle of the pitch which then created space on the outside and were rewarded with the first try of the afternoon which went unconverted to give them a 5-0 lead.

This gave them the upper hand and they made it pay a few minutes later to 12-0 when they broke out of their own half with the Oldham defence failing to move across the pitch and with a number of players in the ensuing overlap strolled in under the posts.

Oldham finally went on the attack, but a further chance went begging with an overlap and a hail Mary pass was attempted when not needed. Oldham continued to try and build pressure but a lack of patience meant the Clitheroe defence held firm a number of attempts from the home side. Oldham had another penalty which was kicked to the corner for a lineout. The usual steady Oldham lineout was not working and Oldham lost the lineout on their own throw with the line begging.

Oldham finally got on the scoreboard following a penalty which was taken quickly with Karl Shenton and Nick hackman making powerful carries before Josh Semple crashed over with Alex Jobson converting the score was 12-7 at half time.

Oldham were under pressure straight from the kick off in the second half when they made an unnecessary error and invited the away team straight into their defensive area and from a resulting penalty, which was missed, Oldham made another error at the 22 restart, which again was unnecessary. This lead to an attacking scrum for Clitheroe who made no mistake this time and scored in the right corner to go 17-7 up.

Clitheroe then lost a man sent off for striking at a ruck and Oldham lost a player to the sin bin in the same incident. This should have been a turning point for the home team but seemed to have the adverse effect. Quick ball on the right hand side at half way and with Clitheroe feeding their winger, in space, with plenty of room for him to outpace the Oldham defence going under the posts to make it 24-7

Oldham answered back following a penalty to the corner with the Oldham forwards driving Clitheroe over the line with Sean Carter touching down and with Alex Jobson converting it was now 24-14

Clitheroe answered back quickly with another converted try. Again pulling the Oldham defence in, to then go wide, this time with their left wing scoring with the try converted making it 31-14.

With the minutes now counting down Oldham try as they may were running out of time and ideas trying to play catch up rugby played without any real structure. However from a cross field kick Sean Carter caught a high ball before charging through the Clitheroe defence to score again with Jobson converting to get Oldham back to within 10 at 31-21. However that was to be the last play of the game as the referee blew full time and Oldham rued another missed opportunity at home.

Vagabonds 26 Oldham 14

Oldham travelled to the Isle of Man for the weekends league fixture against Vagabonds with the hope of earning their opening win of the Counties ADM 3 League season. Oldham welcomed back Reuben Moss to the side to add some go forward and power to the pack and James Edwards and Phil Conroy returned to the back line for the encounter.

The game started with Oldham making decent inroads into the opponentโ€™s half and were rewarded with a penalty early on and Jenson Connell took the opportunity to put Oldham into the lead from the boot to make it 3-0 in the away teamโ€™s favour. Vagabonds however answered back shortly after showing early on the power they had in their large set of forwards by carrying well and got on the board with a converted try to put them in front 7-3.

With both sides attempting to take a foothold of the game Oldham attempted to move the ball around and this again paid dividends with Connell adding a further penalty kick from an offside penalty to bring Oldham to within a point of the hosts.

Oldham continued to attempt to take control of the match and enjoyed a number of phases of play in Vagabondโ€™s half and continued to hammer their line. There were two or three opportunities missed where the wrong decisions cost Oldham clear chances to continue to put pressure on showing a lack of patience when almost over the opponentโ€™s line.

Eventually Oldham unlocked the defence after a number of phases with Corey Kelly getting the ball in space following some good lead up work from the forwards to score an unconverted try and Oldham were back into the lead at 11-7.

With 15 minutes left in the 1st half Oldham just need to keep control take a foothold on the game. Vagabonds won a penalty and kicked to touch in the Oldham defensive 22 metre area at which point unfortunately the referee began to have an overbearing effect upon the eventual result. Oldham forward Josh Semple was given a yellow card for a lineout sack which was perfectly legal leaving the field for 10 minutes. What then compounded matters was 1 minute later Oldham were defending on their line and the referee had judged Karl Shenton offside 5 metres out. What then followed had the Oldham players in disbelief as Shenton was given a yellow card and the referee awarded a penalty try. There were no repeated infringements or warning from the referee and within the space of that minute not only were Oldham down 14-11 but also down to 13 players against 15. Oldham got their heads down and worked hard and managed to not concede during the 11 minutes with some resolute play. With the score the same at half time Oldham just made it back to having a full complement of 15.

The second half started with Oldham attempting to play making good inroads into the vagabondโ€™s half with Moss and Semple carrying well and this earned Oldham another chance with a penalty with Connell adding a further 3 points to bring the scores level. The 2nd half then became a back and forth struggle to see which team could take control. Oldham however could not manage to keep phases together and were penalised three times in possession for clear out of their feet when in good attacking positions in the opponents 22.

This would prove costly as Vagabonds then began to put pressure on the away side and in the closing 15 minutes took two opportunities and scored two tries which took the game away from Oldham and with the visitors tiring whilst trying to play catch up rugby Oldham lost a further player to a sin bin for a high tackle which meant with the minutes ticking down Oldham had no answer, Vagabonds controlled the closing minutes happy to keep at Oldham at bay at 26 points to 14 which was how the match ended.

With a similar story to the previous weeks defeat to Dukinfield, Oldham in the mix with 15 minutes left in the match had not the composure or game management to see their task through. Oldham now have a must win game against Clitheroe at home this coming Saturday to get the season start back on track.
