🚨YORKSHIRE PREMIER LEAGUE🚨

PONTEFRACT 1 (4-1) PONTEFRACT 2

The first match of the new season is in the bank, as the Ponte derby ends in a 4-1 win in favour of the team one.

Fresh off his under-19 Yorkshire Championship crown, Adam Smith (Ponte 2) started his first full season in the YPL with the daunting task of taking on three time club champion Adam Taylor. Smith started the first game strong but soon struggled to cope with Taylor’s hold and deception. The game slipped away from Smith and despite a respectable fight he went down in 3.

At fourth string James Wilkinson (Ponte 2) started the first game surprisingly strongly, amassing a 6-point lead against Tom Bamford (Ponte 1). Tom however soon found his rhythm, cut that lead entirely and after a tiebreak decider in the first, went on to win 3-0).

With the first team 2-0 to the good, club captain Matt Godson (Ponte 1) battled Noah Riley (Ponte 2). Matt never settled into his usual rhythm but did manage to grind out the opening two games. Noah dug deep in the third and his error rate dropped significantly. He went on to claim the third and very nearly the fourth but Matt’s experience told as he closed out the tie 3-1.

That had already closed out the match, but there were some entertaining strings in the upper order for the waiting Ponte crowd. At second string Elijah Thomas (Ponte 2) played debutant Dave Turner (Ponte 1). Dave looked up for the fight and pushed Elijah to a tight first game. Dave never went away but Elijah managed to use his guile and win 3-0 to claim a consolation win for the 2nd team.

On at number one, Lwamba Chileshe (Ponte 2) played his first Ponte match since retiring from the PSA, and took on Scotsman Rory Richmond (Ponte 1), who was also making his debut for the club. Rory is ever improving, and he never gave Lwamba a minute to settle. He claimed a resounding 3-0 win to cap off a great night for the first team as they began their title defence.

Next week the first team are away to Hallamshire, while Ponte 2 host Queens.

🏆 SPONSOR A PONTEFRACT YORKSHIRE PREMIER LEAGUE PLAYER

Pontefract Squash & Leisure Club is giving local businesses the opportunity to sponsor an individual player for the 2026/27 Yorkshire Premier League season.

It is a simple and affordable way to support the club while putting your business alongside one of Pontefract’s leading squash players.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Choose an available player and pay one sponsorship fee covering the season:

🟢 Regular Yorkshire Premier League player - £200
🟢 Less-regular Yorkshire Premier League player - £100

Your company logo will then be added to that player’s individual sponsorship card.

When your sponsored player is selected for a fixture, their individual card will be shared alongside the team graphic as part of the club’s match-night social media content. Where available, the sponsor’s page can also be tagged or linked.

Player sponsorship applies specifically to the player’s individual card. Sponsor logos will not appear on:

❌ The main squad graphic
❌ The team shirts
❌ Separate match-night sponsor artwork

Pre-match write-ups, match reports and other editorial coverage remain separate from the player-sponsorship package.

The aim is not to secure huge corporate deals - it is to give local businesses an accessible way to support Pontefract squash while helping put a few extra pounds into the Yorkshire Premier League season.

Several players are currently available, but availability is limited.
