There’s a name for that feeling that everyone’s watching you fumble with the seat height on a machine: the spotlight effect. It’s a well-documented psychological quirk where we massively overestimate how much other people notice us. It’s because we’re the star of our own movie, so it feels like we must be in everyone else’s too.
Here’s the reality: everyone else is starring in their own movie. That girl loading the bar next to you isn’t scrutinising your form, she’s wondering if her own is off, whether people can tell she is bloated, or notice her spot on her chin.
The spotlight in your head is real. The audience isn’t.
So next time you’re talking yourself out of driving to the gym, remember: nobody’s watching as closely as you think, including - ironically - the people you’re most worried are watching.
Come anyway. The regulars were all beginners once, and every single person here wants to see you succeed. Promise 👊
