The Science of Sound | Part 4
Chronic Pain & Anxiety: The Hidden Connection
Have you ever noticed that your pain feels worse during times of stress?
This is not your imagination. Chronic pain and anxiety are deeply connected through the nervous system.
When the body feels threatened, the nervous system moves into protection mode. Breathing may become shallower, muscles can tighten, sleep can become disrupted, and the brain may become more alert to signs of danger.
Over time, this can create a cycle: Pain increases stress, stress increases nervous system sensitivity and a sensitised nervous system can make pain feel stronger.
The body and nervous system are constantly communicating, and emotional wellbeing can influence how those signals are processed.
Research suggests that supportive practices such as music, sound, relaxation and mindfulness may help calm the nervous system, reduce stress responses and support emotional regulation.
Sound therapy works with rhythm, vibration and gentle sensory input to create moments where the body can begin to shift from a state of alertness towards relaxation.

What Does the Research Say About Music & Chronic Pain?
For many people living with chronic pain, finding support that helps calm the body and nervous system becomes an important part of their wellbeing journey.
Over recent years, researchers have explored how music and sound-based interventions may influence the experience of pain.
Pain is not only a physical sensation.
It is also connected to the brain, emotions, memory, stress responses and the nervous system.
This is why two people with the same injury can experience pain very differently.
Research into music therapy has shown promising results in supporting people living with chronic pain. Studies have explored how music may help by reducing stress, supporting relaxation, improving mood and influencing the way the brain processes pain signals.
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis examined nine randomised controlled trials involving 787 people living with chronic pain. Researchers found that music therapy was associated with reduced pain intensity and improvements in depressive symptoms, although the effects varied depending on the type of condition and the approach used.
Earlier research has also suggested that allowing people to choose music that feels meaningful to them may enhance the supportive effects of music-based interventions.
So how might sound help?
Sound provides the nervous system with rhythm, structure and sensory information. Gentle, predictable sound may help encourage relaxation, support slower breathing, and create a sense of safety within the body.
Sound is a valuable complementary tool that supports the whole person, body, mind and nervous system.
The future of pain care is becoming more holistic, recognising that healing involves more than treating symptoms. It involves supporting the person as a whole.
Current research continues to explore how music and sound-based interventions can be integrated alongside traditional approaches to support people living with chronic pain.

Why Can Pain Continue After an Injury Has Healed?
One of the most confusing experiences for people living with chronic pain is this:
"Why am I still hurting when the injury has healed?"
For many years, pain was understood mainly as a signal that something was damaged in the body. While pain can absolutely be an important warning system, modern neuroscience has shown us that pain is much more complex.
Pain is created through a conversation between the body, the brain, and the nervous system.
When we experience an injury, the nervous system increases its protective response. It sends signals to the brain to encourage rest, awareness and protection while the body repairs itself.
Usually, as healing takes place, these signals gradually settle.
However, for some people, the nervous system can remain in a heightened state of protection even after the original injury has healed. This is known as 'central sensitisation'.
A simple way to imagine this is like a smoke alarm becoming overly sensitive. Instead of only responding to a real fire, it begins reacting to smaller triggers that would not normally create such a strong response.
This can mean that everyday experiences such as movement, touch, stress, or fatigue may create stronger pain signals than expected.
The nervous system has learned a protective pattern, and because the nervous system can learn, it can also adapt.
Research into chronic pain has changed the way we understand healing. Supporting the nervous system through approaches such as relaxation, breathing practices, gentle movement, mindfulness, music and sound-based therapies may help create conditions where the body can begin moving towards greater regulation.
Sound therapy works by providing the nervous system with rhythmic, predictable and calming sensory information. Through vibration, rhythm and resonance, sound may support relaxation and help the body move away from a constant state of alert.
The goal is not to ignore pain, is to support the whole person, body, mind and nervous system. Understanding pain is the first step towards changing our relationship with it.
Research Spotlight
Research into central sensitisation has shown that changes in how the nervous system processes pain signals play an important role in many chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia, persistent back pain and some long-term pain conditions. This has encouraged a more holistic approach that supports both the body and the nervous system.

✨ New Transmission | Premiering today at 22:22
There are moments when a single question quietly changes the direction of our journey.
Following the previous Inner Waters transmissions, I found myself contemplating:
"If the fluid body is the bridge into embodiment… where did consciousness come from before it entered the body?"
This question led me into a profound meditation exploring the descent into form, the sacred journey of consciousness before birth, and the mystery of embodiment.
Tonight, I share Inner Waters IV — The Descent Into Form: Consciousness Before Birth & the Journey of the Soul, premiering at 22:22.
🎥 Watch here: https://youtu.be/p2JSfw-xcm8
If you are new to this body of work, I recommend beginning at the start, as each transmission unfolds naturally from the previous one:
🌊 Inner Waters I — The Sacred Lineage of Emotional Memory
🌊 Inner Waters II — The Phases of Embodied Form
🌊 Inner Waters III — Light, Tears, and the Fluid Body
🌊 Inner Waters IV — The Descent Into Form: Consciousness Before Birth & the Journey of the Soul
Each chapter is an invitation into contemplation, remembrance, and the living mystery of what it means to become human.

🌹The Science of Sound | Part 1
Understanding Chronic Pain
Chronic pain is much more than pain that has lasted a long time. It is a complex experience involving the body, brain, emotions and nervous system. When pain continues for months or years, the nervous system can become increasingly sensitive, meaning signals that were once be interpreted as safe may begin to feel uncomfortable or painful.
This does not mean the pain is imagined. The pain is very real. It means the brain and nervous system have become highly protective, constantly scanning for danger.
Chronic pain can be influenced by many factors, including injury or illness, inflammation, muscle tension, disrupted sleep, stress, anxiety, previous experiences of pain, and changes in how the nervous system processes information.
Pain also affects the way we breathe and move. When the body anticipates discomfort, breathing often becomes shallow, muscles tighten, and the nervous system remains on high alert.
Over time, this can create a cycle where pain increases tension, tension heightens nervous system sensitivity, and that increased sensitivity can make pain feel even stronger.
Research suggests that sound and music-based interventions may help support relaxation, reduce stress, improve emotional wellbeing, and influence how some people experience chronic pain by helping regulate the nervous system.
While sound therapy cannot diagnose, treat or cure the underlying cause of chronic pain, it can be a valuable complementary therapy that helps create the conditions for the body to feel calmer and more supported.
Sometimes the first step isn't trying to fight the pain. Sometimes it's helping the nervous system remember what safety feels like.
Research Spotlight
A large systematic review published in The Lancet (2025) found that music-based interventions can reduce pain intensity and improve emotional wellbeing in many people living with chronic pain. Researchers concluded that music can be a valuable complementary approach alongside standard medical care, as an additional source of support.
