Stornoway vs North Police Scotland

Stornoway’s men returned to rugby action this weekend, in a much anticipated first league game of the season against North Police Scotland. A new season and a reshuffling of the league structure, means plenty of new opposition for Stornoway and hopefully more competitive games that have been seen at Bayhead than in recent seasons. The Police are a good example of this, having finished last season second in the league.

With the morning’s rain clearing up just before kick-off and both teams looking confident, the Bayhead crowd were right to anticipate a flowing game. The police started with the upper hand, with much of the early pressure from their pack working them deep into the home 22 for much of the first 20 minutes. The home defence was looking well organised though and did well to thwart several promising attacks, despite the intense pressure. Stornoway did eventually push play back towards the halfway line before the Police’s backline decided to show their prowess. Quick hands from the 10 put their strong running 12 into just enough space to break through the line before stepping the cover defence for a fine individual try. (0-5).

The first try looked like it could be the blueprint for Police domination, with another try following shortly afterwards in similar fashion. Again with the hard running 12 bursting the line, this time set up his centre partner to score. (0-10). Much to their credit, Stornoway refused to roll over and admit defeat. With the scrum under pressure, the forwards were having to work hard to front up to the bigger Police pack. The lineout was functioning well with winger turned flanker James Clark providing good ball in the middle for the backs to work with. Out wide Drew Maynard was growing into the game thanks to good ball from Dean Drummond at 10, and set up Stornoway’s first half try for Ewan Macleod with a strong run and offload down the right edge. Drummond added the conversion (7-10) and the home side were well and truly back in the game.

Stornoway’s pressure continued for the last ten minutes of the half, with multiple phases of attack leading to the Police giving away a penalty close to their line. The resulting tap and go was worked over the line by Harrison Smith, only to just be held up, with the away side clinging on to a 7-10 lead at half time.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with the Police dominating the early exchanges. Once again, their centre pairing was working well and punched more holes for an early try (7-15). As in the first half, Stornoway refused to roll over and were clearly relishing the contest against strong opposition. Much of the second half was balanced around the middle of the pitch, with good attacking play by both sides matched by resolute defence.
With the clock ticking down, Stornoway had an attacking penalty in the opposition 22. New captain Alex Mackay opted for the point and Drummond slotted the kick to bring Stornoway back within a converted try. (10-15).

The home sides tails were up and with a nasty injury to the Police loosehead, the scrum was now a source of good ball. More pressure from the home team, with Maynard again leading the charge, set up several good positions. Unfortunately, Stornoway just couldn’t quite turn the pressure into points, with a knock on at the ruck spoiling what looked set to be a try to level the game if not win it. In the end the police just held out for a deserved victory 10-15 victory. The home side, while disappointed with the result, had plenty to be positive about, with a strong first outing of the season against a very good side suggesting that they are up for the season to come.
