Is Your Golf Ball Position Costing You Distance & Accuracy?

Ball position is one of the simplest setup fundamentals in golf—and one of the easiest to get wrong.

A good rule of thumb:

✅Driver: Position the ball forward, around the inside of your lead heel.
✅Fairway Woods & Long Irons: Move it slightly back from driver position.
✅Mid Irons (5–7): Gradually move the ball closer to the center.
✅Short Irons & Wedges: Keep the ball near the center of your stance for cleaner contact and better control.

The goal isn't to memorize an exact spot for every club. As the club gets shorter, the ball generally moves closer to the center of your stance.

A consistent ball position helps control your low point, angle of attack, contact, launch, and direction.

Next time you're practicing, check your ball position before changing your swing. Sometimes the setup is the real problem.

Earlier today, Sunday 13th September, we held the 16 SGC Small Course Junior Open 2026, with competitions played over 3, 6 and 9 holes. It was a very nice day to be out on the Ness course, and it was great to see 21 players taking part and producing some excellent golf across all three events.

A big thank you goes to all the scorers who helped on the day, as well as for their continued assistance throughout the summer. Their time and support are very much appreciated by everyone involved with the Stromness Golf Club Junior Section, including the coaches, accredited helpers, parents and, of course, the junior players. The team are Dougie Croy, Stephen Shorter, George McKinlay, Graham Bevan, Emma Morrison, Susan Foubister, Steven Rendall, Isla Rendall and Bill Innes.

Overall, it was an enjoyable day on the Ness course, with a strong turnout and plenty of great play on show. Another very busy night we had at Stromness Golf Club last evening with 29 Juniors attending to take part in our annual skill challenges with 4 activities of offer with a 12-hole round for the putting ladder.
Ruan Temple came out on top of the Skills Test with 48 points, well done Ruan, well done you all, see you scores below.
