We caught up with Womens Head Coach Ben after the game yesterday and this is what he had to say...

"Torquay ladies had their second pre-season outing to Plymouth Albion in what was an energetic and exciting game of rugby to watch.

Our ladies worked incredibly hard making the fixes needed from the previous fixture away to Okehampton, which definitely showed on the pitch this weekend.

Albion were a good physical side who certainly gave us stuff to think about, and they tested us within the game, but our ladies rose to the challenge and again created another little piece of club history with our first WXV game win ever!

There were so many great individual performances but this weekend we connected and put out our best performance yet as a team.

Our travelling support was nothing less than special. The Torquay noise from the stands was dominant and remained that way through the entire 80 minutes. A massive thank you to our supporters from myself, all staff and players.

🏉 Forward of the match:
This went to Meg Swift - she was relentless in the lineout, aggressive in D and carried with utter intent, giving Albion defenders a lot of work in order to take her down. A solid performance.

🏉 Back of the match:
This went to Leah Harman - it’s never easy playing 10 in a new group, but Leah made it look seamless with great use off the boot, controlling the game and showcasing her skillset with ease. Leah directed the forwards, opened channels for the backs, and defended like it was personal. Another great performance.

To sign it off, I personally couldn’t be prouder of our ladies and of our club... we have certainly started to gel and I look forward to our first outing at the Rec - that will be another big day to remember!" B.S

We caught up with Womens Head Coach Ben after their friendly on Sunday at Okehampton...

"The WXV had their first pre-season outing down in Okehampton at the weekend. This was the ladies first proper 15’s game and full 80 minutes.

The women put a good first shift in, slowly finding their feet and showing great glimpses of what’s to come, with some strong individual performances and great team interplay. This was a great first battle and our players should be proud!

Special mentions:

👏🏼 Back of the match - Harri Smith
Despite being our smallest player, Harri is becoming a giant in defence and keeping a calm controlled pace to our game from 9.

👏🏼 Forward of the match - Kharis Hole
With exceptional line breaks, dominant carries and and enforcing in defence, this was a great first outing as a debutant for Torquay.

We came away having gained valuable experience, a lot of positives and some great work-ons. Credit to Oakhampton - they were a very well organised and well-drilled team and put on one hell of a showcase of rugby!

That being said, our ladies showed some great elements and taught us what our work-ons are, which we will address in the coming weeks and next pre-season fixtures. Again, another proud moment for the club and we are building nicely going into our first season.

We go again this weekend [Sat 22nd] at Plymouth Albion, KO 18:30pm at Brickfields after the Albion men’s game.

🚨 🏉 𝚁𝙵𝚄 𝚄𝙿𝙳𝙰𝚃𝙴 - 𝚂𝙴𝙰𝚂𝙾𝙽 𝙳𝙴𝙻𝙰𝚈 🏉 🚨

As you may already be aware, the RFU has confirmed that the start of this season's competitive community rugby programme will now be pushed back until the week commencing 21 September.

This impacts not only our Seniors (men and women) and Colts, but the junior section also.

What is the latest guidance and what happens now?

🏉 Competitive league and cup fixtures covered by the RFU decision will NOT take place before 21 September
🏉 Training sessions will continue where pitches are deemed safe and in line with RFU guidance
🏉 Friendly matches can still be arranged and played where conditions and player welfare allow it

As always, the safety and wellbeing of our players is the priority. Given the current ground conditions, we completely understand the reasoning behind the RFU's decision and support the approach being taken.

We appreciate this isn't the news many of us were hoping for, especially after all the hard work put in over the summer by players, coaches and volunteers across the club. We will keep you all updated as soon as we receive further information.

Tics player Joshua Lambe took part in the Exeter Chiefs Academy U17s Marlvan College Festival last week. Joshua has been playing for Exeter Chiefs Academy since last September and has been playing up a year. He has also taken part in U17s Summer Camp training in Truro since July this year.

It's great to see Joshua making excellent progress in his rugby journey and he is hoping to continue with Chiefs U17s this coming season (he is guaranteed a place with the U16s Chiefs Academy but is waiting to see if he will continue to play up). We should find out more in the coming weeks and will let you all know of his progress!
