WORK-LIFE BALANCE: Somehow, everybody else’s problems keep ending up with you. 😬
If you’re always the responsible one, you probably don’t consciously decide:
Excellent. I’ll carry absolutely everything. 😂
It happens much more quietly.
Someone’s worried → you listen.
Something’s gone wrong → you fix it.
Someone forgot something → you remember it.
There’s tension → you smooth it over.
Someone at work is struggling → you take something off them.
And because you’re capable, caring and reliable…
you CAN.
But here’s the distinction I think capable people sometimes need:
Being able to carry something doesn’t automatically make it yours to carry.
That applies at work too.
Helping a colleague doesn’t mean permanently absorbing their workload.
Supporting an employee doesn’t mean solving every problem for them.
Being a good manager doesn’t mean carrying an entire team’s emotional load home.
Being reliable doesn’t mean becoming workplace Lost Property for everything nobody knows what to do with. 😬😂
So before automatically picking up the next thing, try asking:
Do I care about this?
and
Am I actually responsible for it?
You can care deeply about something without becoming responsible for fixing it.
Sometimes stability isn’t learning to carry more.
It’s learning what you can put down. ⚓️
