Owned and run by Patsy Day, Ludlow Farm nestles in a sheltered valley just outside Warminster, with direct access into Longleat Forest offering miles of off-road hacking. It is less than a mile from the A36 Warminster bypass (Bath to Salisbury road) and just over ½ mile from Warminster town centre. Since moving there over 7 years ago, Patsy has now completed the total refurbishment of the farm. This includes construction of the 65m x 25m light and airy indoor and 60m x 30m outdoor floodlit arenas. Patsy has been involved with the equestrian world since her pony club days in the late 1960’s and went onto gain BHS qualifications (and her Pony Club 'A' Test) in the late 70's. She initially trained with Stephen Clarke and had the opportunity to be taught on two of his Grand Prix horses. In her 20’s her first love was eventing (when affiliated eventing was run by the British Horse Society and the lowest level was Novice). She was often offered rides on ‘sticky’ horses as seemed able to persuade them around a XC course. She has successfully trained, produced, ridden and competed a very wide variety of horses. Gradually she became more involved with producing younger horses in all disciplines and selling them on. Throughout, her ethos has been to work with each individual equine mind, maintaining consistency and clarity. Patsy trains them to balance and carry themselves; nothing is manufactured, fiddled or forced – the simple adage of ‘ride your horse forward and keep him straight’ is a golden rule. Response, rideability, softness and harmony are all key goals. For over 20 years, before moving back to Wiltshire, Patsy owned a large yard in Derbyshire which she built up from scratch. Along with running both affiliated and unaffiliated dressage and show-jumping competitions, breaking, schooling, sorting horse and rider problems, Patsy frequently travelled to Ireland (in their heyday of breeding) and over 20 years, successfully sourced over a thousand young horses to bring back to her Derbyshire yard where they were broken and brought on to sell into various disciplines. Many of you have owned/still own a ‘Stubley’ horse which started its ridden life at Stubley Hollow in Derbyshire. Many of these horses have turned into your best friend and many went onto be champions in their specialist field. Patsy’s horses have been her greatest teachers and the main source of her depth of knowledge. She has ridden literally many hundreds of different types and most have taught her something – especially the difficult ones! Since down-sizing to Ludlow, Patsy now offers training to riders on their own horses being able to use her wealth of experience to help riders learn the importance of establishing correct basic training. Remember the tortoise beat the hare…and when the foundations are correct, a horse develops the correct physique and what follows is so much easier and successful for both horse and rider. Patsy is BHS qualified, fully insured, has judged unaffiliated dressage to medium level, is an experienced course builder (trained by Maureen Summers – Hickstead course designer) and judged hunters and youngstock at county level. She was also a Pony Club instructress and examiner for over 30 years. If you would like more info about anything that happens at Ludlow Farm, please give Patsy a call or message her on 07802 586537.

🙏 THANKS to all who came to yesterday’s pm RAISED POLEWORK SESSIONS. 🏇🏽
3 busy groups who tested out all the variety of pole patterns.

Lovely to see horses think 🤔, learn and improve so quickly. When riders allow them to work things out and learn from mistakes, they learn so much more quickly and improve core strength, balance and control - which is a lot of what we are working towards. Thus helping to develop a stronger, more balanced horse who is easier to control and has improved proprioception.

Quote of the evening “We learned last session that the less we do (as riders), the better the horses go”. 🥳Absolutely!! Have the patience to let them learn - training is not instant and if at first you don’t suceed…. It actually doesn’t matter! They usually learn if you keep your training clear, calm and consistent.

Pics below show the pattern of poles I put out and a couple showing the amount of flexion both shoulder/foreleg and quarters/hindleg make when asked to walk a simple exercise. Hard work for your neddies! I bet they all slept last night whilst their bodies were building new muscle!💪

NEXT CLINIC is on:
WEDNESDAY 7th OCTOBER and NOT on Thursday 8th.
Please What’s App me on 07802 586537 if you’d like to join? £25/horse.
Groups limited to 4 horses at:
4.30pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm.

P.S. by request - Next session I’ll build the raised arc with longer and shorter strides again so some of you can practice achieving the lengthening. It’s such a good exercise which needs balance and power to achieve. And we’ll do more canter work exercises for those who want to work on that (although staying in trot is fine too).

RAISED POLES on THURSDAY 24th Sept.

Would you like to join us? We had great fun and horses learned and improved in our last session underlining how important and helpful these exercises are for ALL types of horses (and riders). They really do improve balance, core strength, adjustability, hoof to brain coordination and more.

I forgot to take pics during the sessions 🤦‍♀️, but if anyone has anything they can post here, pls do.

Pls confirm you’ll be coming if you booked during the last clinic.
I’ve been asked to add another group at 4.30pm which is great as long as we have enough takers for 3 groups at:
4.30pm
5.30pm
and
6.30pm

Please What’s App 07802 586537 to join or confirm a place at whatever time suits.

£25/horse… sessions last an hr, but you can take a breather at anytime if you need to. We all learn by watching each other as well. It can be as simple or as technical as you feel your horse is capable of achieving.
You’ll probably be surprised at how quickly they learn and improve. 🏇🏽

Heights altered to suit individuals if needed. But I will always adapt any of the groups to suit what you all want. Just ask.

GROOM’s JOB - one day a week part-time.

We are looking for someone capable of looking after the horses @ Ludlow Farm every SATURDAY.
You will be your own boss so everything is reasonably flexible as long as the work is done well. The chores will take you about 3 hrs split between morning and evening stables.

This mainly involves morning feeds, turning out/ bringing in and a few stables to muck out. Late afternoon feeds and bringing in/turning out.

Pay is piece work, so if you are efficient, it’s not much work and you are paid well.

Preferably someone living locally and must have a reliable car.

Please contact Patsy by either phone or What’s App on 07802 586537 to apply or for further information.

Previous applicants who were interested in the full-time job, please reapply if this is of interest to you instead?

To start as soon as possible. 🧹
