Whitehaven Golf Club welcomed competitors from across West Cumbria and beyond on Saturday 4 July for the club’s Open Texas Scramble. A total of 15 teams contested the event, with players representing Whitehaven alongside visitors from Seascale, St Bees, Maryport, Cockermouth, Silloth-on-Solway, Brampton, Eden and Stony Holme.

Although the day remained dry, overcast skies and a blustery wind provided a stern test throughout the competition, demanding accurate shot-making and good teamwork in the popular four-man Texas Scramble format.

Taking first prize were the mixed team of Carl Lorimer (Stony Holme), Martin Shepherd (Eden), Andrew Plunkett (Eden) and Peter Cawson (Brampton), who returned an excellent nett score of 56 to secure victory and the winners’ prize of £260 (£65 per player).

Second place, with a nett 58 after countback, went to the Seascale quartet of Nick Blair, Matthew Ball, Steven Ball and P. Cruden, earning £160 (£40 per player).

Also returning a nett 58, Adam Bragg, Simon Bragg, Stephen Amor and M. Slee, all representing St Bees Golf Club, finished third following countback to receive £80 (£20 per player).

Fourth place was claimed by the team of Allan Pascoe (Whitehaven), Floyd Hewitson (Seascale), Daniel Irving (Whitehaven) and Whitehaven Men’s Captain Gary Edwards (Whitehaven), who also posted a nett 58 and collected £60 (£15 per player).

The Nearest the Pin competition on the 2nd hole was won by Whitehaven member Simon Jackson, whose excellent tee shot finished just 12 feet 6 inches from the flag.

All prizes are in form of vouchers lodged with Cumbria Golf Centre in the Driving Range.

Whitehaven Golf Club extends its thanks to all members and visiting golfers who supported the event and contributed to another successful Open competition. The club’s next Open event, a 2 from 4 Team Competition, will be held on Saturday 1 August. Entries can be made by adding team names to the start sheet on the members’ noticeboard or by booking through the Golf Empire website.
