On Saturday was groundhop 190 and a trip to Shoreham by Sea in Sussex to see Shoreham v Jarvis Brook in league one of the Southern combination.

Shoreham relegated last season had started the season poorly and early doors sat in the relegation zone. In midweek they were beaten by todays opponents 4-2 in the Sussex cup and manager Connor Cox had also left the club.

This was going to be a tough watch for the Shoreham faithful and the young man who was excellent on his drum throughout and it certainly was with the highly efficient Jarvis Brook 2 up on 10 minutes, 3 up by 22 and 4-0 at half time.

After watching Eastbourne Town dismantle Horley Town 7-0 last week the possibility of another goalfest was seriously on the cards given Shoreham's first half performance.

Shoreham came out second half on the front foot and the second half was a very even affair and the score remained unchaged at the final whistle.

All their changes added energy and fight especially the young skillful Jegan Jathusan who looked out of his depth at times, but recieved constant encouragement from the bench and his team mates, surely with more game time a player to keep an eye on.

Jarvis Brook will have a good season but Shoreham need a good result somewhere to instill belief and they may have to take a closer look at some of their under 23 squad for inspiration.

A big shoutout for the programme editors Mike Wenham and Stuart Slaney (also Chairman & Owner) not because it cost a quid but the quality and content is excellent and now sits in my top three alongside Folkestone and Fisher.

Are we in for a goalfest after seeing Eastbourne Town win 7-0 last week we are currently watching Shoreham at home 3-0 down after 21 minutes to Jarvis Brook.

Saturdays groundhop saw us take a trip to Eastbourne on the South coast. Eastbourne has three non league clubs none of which we had been to before. Borough who play in the Isthmian Premier, United who sit proudly at the top of the Southern Combination League and our hosts the Town who play in the Isthmian South East.Their home ground is called The Saffrons which is an easy 10 minutes walk from the station and sits parallel to a very active bowling green which is easily viewable if you find the football tiresome.

Their visitors were recently promoted Horley Town and with both teams fairly mid table of the Isthmian South East this looked like on paper a close affair. It was anything but.

Eastbourne were quick out of the block and raced into a deserved 2-0 league with 20 minutes on the clock. Things got dramatically worse when Max Foulkes in goal was sent off on 22 for a mis timed challenged after rushing outside his area. The young man left the field looking sadly desolute and his place in goal taken up by one of the centre halves I believe.
By half time Eastbourne had extended the lead to 4-0 thanks to doubles from Sonny James Walsh and Arron Hopkinson.

The second half thankfully was not a non event as is the case in alot of games when a team is being heavily beaten and a man light. Eastbourne continue their attacking play and their quest for goals was rewarded running out 7-0 winners with centre forward Sonny James Walsh bagging his hat trick on 75 minutes.

This is a lovely little ground, all the amenities you will need and very nice friendly people who were also very appreciative of the efforts of Horley as much as their own team, comfortable park benches scattered around and the ones behind the goal made the whole experience very cosy indeed.

The away followers of clubs in this league should enjoy this one.

At the ripe old age of 61 I take in my first live European football match with my team Crystal Palace. How things have changed from last year to this when tickets were difficult to come by.

Tickets were readily available for last nights game but not cheap (£25 for a junior is steep). Incidently my first game in 1975 against rivals Brighton cost 30 pence which is worth £2.67 based on UK consumer price inflation😂

An attendance of 18,000 surely highlights football at this level is at risk of imploding.

Nevertheless the atmosphere was amazing with Palace winning 4-0, a comfortable result on paper, though with the defence still gelling they were lucky to get away with a clean sheet, Poznan had the chances early but were wasteful.

The smile on my sons face seeing class players such as Wharton, Pino and Richards was priceless and his night was capped off when Sarr came on late.
Hopefully a night that will live long in his memory as does my first game in 1975.

FA Trophy day and a trip into Hertforshire to the pretty town of Ware. A train station with a level crossing always a win win with Jamie. A very straightforward mostly flat 25 minute walk to ground(buses will drop you right outside the ground but why wait for one if the weathers nice).

Ware who play in the Southern League Division One Central were hosting AFC Sudbury who play at the same step but in the Isthmian League North.

If i had not known better i would have assumed Ware were a step higher such was their early dominance. They had the opportunities first half to bury Sudbury but a mixture of poor finishing and outstanding keeping by Sudbury keeper Finlay Iron kept the score to 2-0 at half time thanks to a sublime run and finish from Ware number 7 Theo Ofori who incidently would have been my man of the match but that has to go to Finlay Iron and Rechan Esprit.

The second half was alot more even and early doors Sudbury definately looked like they might come back. Any chance of a comeback was extinguished when after winning a late penalty failed to convert through a poor Reuben Chinnery strike. The game ended 2-0 and Ware progress to the next round and with their stubborn defence and a front 4 or 5 who really link up well will be a handful for anyone.

Saturday saw me visit Chislehurst Glebe for their clash with one of my favourite teams Fisher.

A nice easy trip for me from Cannon Street station down to leafy Chislehurst and a short bus ride to Foxbury Avenue. A club with a nice set up and the bar adjacent to the entrance. Admission is £10 and programmes are unfortunately online though i still haven't found it🤫 and the attendance was 127.

A pretty even first half which Glebe edged 1-0 thanks to the prolific number 9 Jamie Philpot. heading in after 4 minutes. Fisher came out with a purpose 2nd half dominating the ball and finally got their reward on 65minutes when Temi Alaka scored after a well constructed move.The game was theirs for the taking with Glebe struggling to keep hold of the ball or get out of their half until they started to play out long. The result of this switch was Jamie Philpot grabbing a second with a fine finish from a long clearance out from the back. This guy will score plenty more this season and is one to watch and at the age of 29 is good enough to play at a higher level.

Fisher made the changes and pushed and pushed and got a deserved equalizer in around the 3rd minute of injury time, a far post low diving header from Fishers own number 9 Euan Mutale who grabbed his 4th goal in 3 games.

This is a tough competitive league and i expect to see Fisher at least make the play offs, for Glebe it may be a tough season but they should retain their status at this level especially if Mr Philpot continues banging them in.
