Each tennis manufacturer makes different families of racquets, for example, Babolat make the Pure Aero. Within this family there are a number of different models that all weigh a different amount.

A heavier racquet generally gives you more weight behind the ball for powerful shots and gives you more precision for control but can be harder to use. A lighter racquet is generally more forgiving, easier to use and nicer on the arm.

Most racquets come factory strung which means they have the manufacturers’ strings in them. Most manufacturers put their cheaper strings in their racquets, you’re paying for the quality of the materials in the frame, not the strings.

At IT Sports we prefer to sell you a frame only model and then we custom string the racquet free of charge (in line models)* to suit you. Strings make a huge difference to the way a racquet plays. We can put in strings to help with spin, comfort or touch. We can alter the tension of the string to give you more power or control. We can guide you and help you make the right decision to choose the perfect frame for you and the perfect string choice too.

These racquets head sizes are all different and range from 113 square inches to 97 square inches. A bigger head on a racquet generally has a bigger sweet spot, is better for power and is easier to use. A smaller head on a racquet generally is better for control, it’s stiffer to use but is better for precision.

What does the balance of weight in racquets mean?

Some racquets are evenly balanced throughout the frame, some have more weight in the head and some have more weight in the handle. Generally, pro racquets are head light and ultra light racquets are head heavy. Some racquets have a number on them which makes it easier to see if they are head heavy or head light. The bigger the number, the lighter the head!

Do you know which grip size on your tennis racquet you should be using?

We used to say (and it’s still a good guide) that you should be able to get a finger’s width between your fingers and palm, so the fingers and palm do not touch. This was so you don’t over grip and hold the handle too tightly, that could potentially put stress on tendons, that could lead to conditions like tennis elbow. However, our in-line racquets today have so much shock absorption material in them we don’t have to worry so much. The general guide now is to use a handle that feels comfortable in the hand.

Grip sizes for adults are usually called 2, 3 or 4. A grip 2 is 4 1/4 inches in circumference. A grip 3 is 4 3/8 inches in circumference and a grip 4 is 4 1/2 inches in circumference. It is also possible to get grip 5 in certain models. Junior grips are generally grip 0 and grip 1.

Do you know the different padel head shapes?
The shape of the head has a big influence on balance, sweet spot, power and control.

🎾 Round head - large, centred sweet spot, excellent control, easy to manoeuvre with a low balance

🎾 Teardrop - medium sized sweet spot, slightly higher than centre, great mix of power and control, with a medium balance

🎾 Diamond - smaller, higher positioned sweet spot, maximum power for smashes and volleys, with a high balance. Best for advanced, aggressive players as it can be harder to control
