On February 3, 1959, after a concert in Clear Lake, Iowa, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson boarded a small plane to reach the next stop of their tour more quickly.
Shortly after takeoff, due to bad weather and the pilot’s inexperience with night flying, the plane crashed into a field. There were no survivors.

That tragedy shook the emerging world of rock ’n’ roll and became known as “The Day the Music Died
