The 15th of August is Dekapentavgoustos, the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (Panagia). It is a major national public holiday in Greece often called the "Summer Easter". Cities empty as people travel to home villages and islands for church services, massive street feasts (panigiria), music, and dancing.
