This page is about our 50km hike/run challenge over Lantau which is held once a year. This is open to all hikers and trail runners.
Our very own event, “Lost Sole 50km Lantau Challenge”, is held every February. The name came from fearing that I would lose the soles of my beloved, but worn, Scott trail shoes before I retired them from the trails of Hong Kong. Plenty of other soles were found along the way but none belonging to the Hong Kong Hikers who participated in the 1st Annual 50km challenge. This event is for both runners
and hikers. There are no prizes at the end apart from kudos for completing. To celebrate the end of the challenge, ice cold beer will be waiting at one of Mui Wo's fine establishments. The course is a circular route starting from the green mailbox at Mui Wo ferry pier. We follow the Lantau trail according to the markers starting at L001 and along the road to Nam Shan. From there we continue along the Lantau trail over Sunset peak and then up and over Lantau peak. Once down Lantau peak, we have our first check point (CP1). From there we pass Ngong Ping and its tourists and on towards the hills of Kwun Yam Shan & Keung Shan. We hike along until we get to marker L045 then turn down a trail which will take us to the Shek Pik catchwater and join the Lantau trail again between L076/77. Continue along the trail till marker L089 and continue up to the Shek Pik bbq site at the other side of the dam where CP2 awaits. The course continues along the catchwater and we rejoin the Lantau trail at marker L102 and follow all the markers till L139 in Mui Wo. Last stop is at the green mailbox from where we started where you will want to take your well deserved finish line photo. Distance is around 50.5km and an elevation gain of over 2,300 meters. Dates for the 2018 event will be announced in July/August so keep checking back.
