Catamaran sailmaking is one of the highest levels of sailmaking.
The margin for error is incredibly small.
High-performance catamarans are fast, highly loaded and extremely sensitive to changes in sail shape, rig setup and trim. Nothing works in isolation: sail, mast, rig, platform, foils, crew and the way the boat is sailed all influence each other.
That is what makes designing and building catamaran sails so demanding.
A sail has to deliver the intended flying shape under real loads, while the mast bends and rotates, the platform deforms under load and the apparent wind changes rapidly with boat speed.
And experience teaches you something important:
not every millimetre matters equally.
The real skill is knowing which ones do.
That knowledge comes from years of designing, building, measuring, testing, racing and modifying, then validating whether the change actually made the boat faster.
F16, F18, A-Class and Tornado have been a major part of this development at 1D Sails for more than a decade.
We have tested that knowledge at World Championships.
Catamaran sailmaking teaches you to understand the whole system, not just the sail.
And that knowledge goes into every sail we build.
