Without Prana, the life force, the vital life force, not a single cell can act. When prana leaves the body, the whole body collapses. So, it is called "sariradaraka" or the upholder of the body. One maintains a healthy relationship with prana by regular mindful practice of pranayama
The universe is full of objects. All objects need space to exist. Without space no object can exist. But space can exist without objects. All objects including thoughts need space. Thoughts, incessant, also need space to exist, the mental space or citta akasa. Even as thoughts need space, mental space, the mental space can exist without thoughts as in the state of nirodha of a yogi.
Now of the subject object duo. Trillions of physical objects and more mental objects exist for the subject to experience. Without the subject no object will be known. In this subject/object relationship, the subject has one essential characteristic which is consciousness. It is aware of the objects. That consciousness or awareness at individual level, is the subject and that should be called "I". I am pure, eternal, immortal non-mutating consciousness, . I experience objects, but I can also exist without objects. Then I, the subject am in a state of kaivalya, moksha, turiya, nirvana, brahmanirvana or whatever.
