On this day in 1896, Indian-born England cricketer K.S. Ranjitsinhji achieved a remarkable first-class feat that still stands out in cricket history. Playing for Sussex against Yorkshire, he scored two centuries on the same day — a truly extraordinary achievement.

Just a few months earlier, Ranjitsinhji had announced himself on the international stage with a century on his Test debut against Australia.

He went on to play 15 Tests for England, scoring 989 runs at an average of 44.95, including two centuries — but it was performances like this one for Sussex that helped establish him as one of the most gifted batsmen of his era.

दोस्तों, आज टी20 के दौर में क्रिस गेल और धोनी के छक्कों की बहुत बात होती है। लेकिन आज भारतीय क्रिकेट के उस ओरिजिनल सिक्स-हिटर(Original Six-Hitter) और सबसे पहले सुपरस्टार की बात करते हैं, जिसकी ताकत देखकर गोरे अंग्रेज़ भी कांप उठते थे! हम बात कर रहे हैं भारत के सबसे पहले टेस्ट कप्तान—कर्नल सी.के. नायडू (Col. C.K. Nayudu) की!

बात है 1 दिसंबर 1926 की।उस समय भारत को क्रिकेट खेलने वाला देश नहीं माना जाता था। आर्थर गिलिगन (Arthur Gilligan) की कप्तानी में इंग्लैंड की सबसे खूंखार MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) की टीम भारत दौरे पर आई थी। अंग्रेजों का मानना था कि हिंदुस्तानी लोग शारीरिक रूप से कमज़ोर हैं और वो कभी अंग्रेजों की बराबरी का क्रिकेट नहीं खेल सकते।

बॉम्बे जिमखाना (Bombay Gymkhana) के मैदान पर MCC का मुक़ाबला हिंदू टीम (The Hindus) से हो रहा था। अंग्रेजों के तेज़ गेंदबाज़ आग उगल रहे थे और भारतीय टीम के 3 विकेट महज़ 67 रन पर गिर चुके थे।तभी क्रीज़ पर कदम रखा 6 फुट ऊंचे, चौड़े सीने वाले एक फौलादी हिंदुस्तानी शेर ने— सी.के. नायडू!

और फिर शुरू हुआ बॉम्बे के मैदान पर क्रिकेट इतिहास का सबसे खौफनाक नरसंहार (The Massacre)नायडू ने न कोई हेलमेट पहना था, न कोई भारी-भरकम पैड। लेकिन उनके हाथों में जो बल्ला था, वो अंग्रेजों के लिए मौत का फरमान बन गया!

नायडू ने अंग्रेज़ गेंदबाज़ों (खासकर स्टुअर्ट बॉयस और मॉरिस टेट) की ऐसी बेदर्दी से धुनाई की, जैसी आज तक किसी ने नहीं देखी थी। उन्होंने एक गेंद को इतनी ज़ोर से मारा कि गेंद स्टेडियम पार करके सीधा बॉम्बे जिमखाना की छत (Roof) पर जाकर गिरी!
अंग्रेज़ गेंदबाज़ हैरान थे कि यह हिंदुस्तानी आखिर किस मिट्टी का बना है। नायडू ने उस दिन महज़ 116 मिनट (2 घंटे से भी कम समय) के अंदर 153 रनों की तूफानी और ऐतिहासिक पारी ठोक दी!

अपनी इस खूंखार पारी में सी.के. नायडू ने 13 भयंकर चौके और 11 गगनचुंबी छक्के जड़े! (ज़रा सोचिए, 1926 में बिना बाउंड्री रोप्स के, भारी बल्ले से 11 छक्के मारना किसी सुपरह्यूमन का ही काम था!पूरे बॉम्बे स्टेडियम में बैठे हज़ारों हिंदुस्तानी ख़ुशी से पागल हो गए। MCC के कप्तान आर्थर गिलिगन नायडू की इस ताकत और स्वैग (Swag) को देखकर इतने खौफज़दा और प्रभावित हुए कि उन्होंने तुरंत इंग्लैंड के बोर्ड (Lord's) को चिट्ठी लिखी।

गिलिगन ने कहा— इन हिंदुस्तानियों के पास सी.के. नायडू जैसा फौलादी बल्लेबाज़ है। ये कमज़ोर नहीं हैं, इन्हें तुरंत इंटरनेशनल टेस्ट स्टेटस (Test Status) दिया जाए!

और दोस्तों, इसी एक पारी के खौफ और सम्मान की वजह से 1932 में हिंदुस्तान को इंटरनेशनल टेस्ट क्रिकेट खेलने का दर्ज़ा मिला! और सी.के. नायडू शान से भारत के पहले टेस्ट कप्तान बने!
लेकिन अगर 1926 में कर्नल सी.के. नायडू ने अपने उन 11 छक्कों से अंग्रेजों का घमंड न तोड़ा होता, तो शायद भारतीय क्रिकेट का इतिहास ही कुछ और होता।

On this day in 1957, Tom Graveney played one of the finest innings of his Test career, scoring a superb 258 in the third Test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge. His knock helped England amass 619 for 6 declared and put themselves in a strong position to push for victory.

But the West Indies refused to give in. Frank Worrell carried his bat for a magnificent 191 in the first innings, keeping his side in the contest. After being asked to follow on, they found another saviour in Collie Smith, whose career-best 168 frustrated England’s attack and helped secure a hard-fought draw.

While Graveney’s double century was the standout innings of the match, Worrell and Smith’s determined efforts ensured the Test would be remembered for much more than England’s dominance.

On 27.02.1965 Dilip Sardesai scored his first International test Century by scoring 200 not out against New Zealand in the 3rd Test Match played from 12-15 March 1965 played at Barbourne Cricket Stadium in Bombay (now Mumbai) an innings that famously helped Indian National Cricket team stave off a defeat after India followed on.
