Why Buddy Separation Is Easier on a DPV — And Why Proper Training Matters

A DPV can completely change the way you dive.

You can cover greater distances, explore larger sites, reduce your workload, and reach places that would be exhausting or even impractical to reach by swimming.

But there is one thing that changes too:
Distance happens FAST.

When swimming, a small difference in speed between two divers is usually easy to notice and correct. On a DPV, just a few seconds of difference can put you surprisingly far apart. Add visibility, a change of direction, a distracted diver, different scooter speeds, or simply turning your attention toward something interesting—and suddenly your buddy may no longer be where you expect them to be.

This is why DPV diving isn’t simply about learning how to operate the scooter. It’s about learning how to safely dive as a team while using one.

🤝 Maintain team awareness.
Know where your buddy is and regularly confirm their position.

⚡ Match your speed.
Your scooter should allow the team to travel together—not turn the dive into an accelerate-and-brake ride.

📐 Understand positioning.
Agree on where each diver should be before the dive and maintain that formation.

👀 Keep checking.
Don’t assume your buddy is there just because they were there a few seconds ago.

🛑 Know what to do when contact is lost.
Stop, stabilize, and follow a pre-agreed lost-buddy procedure rather than continuing forward.

A DPV gives you more range, more possibilities, and more freedom underwater. But more capability also requires more awareness.
That’s why proper DPV training matters.

Learning how to control the scooter is only the beginning. Learning how to integrate it into your diving, your team, your procedures, or emergencies is what allows you to use its full potential safely.

Recreational Diving: Single Tank vs. Doubles vs. Sidemount

❓Which one should you choose?

⚫️ Single Tank

For most rec divers it’s the perfect choice that provides enough gas for an enjoyable dive. It is simple, lightweight, easy to transport, and available everywhere. Setup is straightforward, easy to maintain and troubleshoot.

➕Advantages:
• Lightweight & easy to use
• Available everywhere
• Lower equipment cost
• Ideal for travel

➖Limitations:
• Only one gas source
• Limited gas supply
• Less redundancy

For many divers, that’s perfectly fine because recreational dives are planned with direct access to the surface.

⚫️⚫️ Doubles

Doubles are often associated with technical diving, but many rec divers also enjoy diving them.
The biggest benefit is redundancy and gas amount.

Each cylinder has its own regulator, and if one side develops a problem, the diver can isolate the manifold and still breathe from the remaining cylinder.

Doubles also provide balanced trim, solid feeling, and excellent stability in the water.

➕Advantages:
• Large gas supply
• Full redundancy
• Excellent balance
• Ideal preparation for tech diving

➖Limitations:
• Heavy to carry
• Requires additional training
• Not available everywhere

Carrying doubles does not automatically make you safer. Without valve drill practice and gas management, the additional equipment can increase complexity.

⚫️ Sidemount ⚫️

Originally developed for cave exploration, sidemount has become increasingly popular among rec divers.

Many divers love the flexibility. Cylinders can be attached in the water, making shore entries much easier. Individual cylinders are lighter to carry than a set of doubles.
Sidemount also offers great streamlining and easy access to valves.

➕Advantages:
• Redundancy
• Lighter during transport
• Comfortable for shore diving
• Easy valve access

➖Limitations:
• Longer setup
• More skills to master
• Requires regular gas balancing between cylinders

Sidemount requires training to achieve good trim, cylinder positioning, and efficient gas management.

Which one is the best?
The best is the one that matches your type of diving.

💬 “I Don’t Need a CCR Because I Don’t Plan to Do Technical Diving.”
Totally valid point. But here’s a fresh perspective.

While most people associate Closed Circuit Rebreathers (CCRs) with deep techdiving, they’re becoming increasingly popular among recreational divers too, even those staying above 30 meters.

❓Why Use a rebreather for Recreational Diving?

✔️Silence & Stealth
No bubbles=no noise. You enjoy more peace, blend into the environment, get closer to marinelife, hear the reef crackling, and feel truly immersed. (Unless your buddy’s on open circuit😅)

✔️Longer Dive Times
Even on shallow reef dives, CCRs recycle your breathing gas, giving you significantly longer underwater time which is ideal if you are a photo/videographer, or someone who enjoys taking it slow.

✔️Less Gas Consumption=More Efficiency
You carry less gas (with bailout only for safe ascend), and get more runtime.

✔️Warm, Moist Breathing Gas
No dry mouth and cold lungs. CCR gas is warm and humid, making long dive days more comfortable and less tiring.

✔️Excellent Buoyancy Control
No bubbles means no sudden buoyancy swings from exhalation. Hovering becomes smoother—especially great for divers working with cameras. (But it does take some practice to master buoyancy on CCR!)

❓What Is a “Recreational” Rebreather?
Recreational CCRs are simpler, lighter, and often more affordable than “full tech rigs”. They’re sometimes limited in depth (usually up to 40m/130ft), have pre-set PO₂ levels, and are designed for ease of use.
Many agencies now offer recreational CCR certifications without complex deco procedures.

🚨 But Training Is Still Essential
Don’t let the word “recreational” fool you—this is still a life-support system. You’ll need to understand the system and loop mechanics, learn to monitor and manage PO₂, practice bailout procedures and build strong pre-dive habits and perform checks.

Why Continuing Education Matters

Scuba diving is often introduced as an adventurous activity, where completing an entry-level certification is only the beginning. While basic training provides the skills necessary to dive safely under favorable conditions, the underwater environment is dynamic, unpredictable, and diverse. This is where continuing education becomes essential.

First, further training expands a diver’s competence and confidence. As divers progress into advanced courses, they are exposed to new environments such as deeper waters, wrecks, currents… and are taught how to manage the associated risks responsibly. Each level of education builds upon the fundamentals, refining buoyancy, trim, and situational awareness. The more a diver trains, the more instinctive these skills become, allowing them to focus less on survival and more on the experience itself.

Second, continuing education strengthens safety. Diving accidents often occur not due to equipment failure, but because of human error, stress, or poor decision-making under pressure. Education introduces divers to emergency protocols, redundant systems, and advanced planning strategies, which are vital in preventing and managing incidents. Moreover, by regularly engaging in training, divers keep their skills current.

Third, education opens doors to exploration and personal growth. Technical/cave diving, underwater photography, scientific diving, and conservation projects all require specialized knowledge and training. Without further education, these opportunities remain inaccessible. Beyond the practical benefits, continuing education also fosters a mindset of discipline, curiosity, and respect for the underwater environment.

Finally, education contributes to the broader diving community. Well-trained divers serve as role models, mentors, and advocates for safety and conservation. Their example helps elevate standards across the industry, encouraging others to approach diving with responsibility and professionalism.

CCR vs OC for technical diving — is one really better?

The short answer is: it depends.

Open circuit has been the foundation of technical diving for decades, and for good reason. It is reliable, simple, robust, and easier to understand and maintain. For many dives, especially shorter technical dives or “shallower” technical depths, OC remains an excellent tool. A well-trained diver on open circuit can safely accomplish incredible things.

But then there is the world of rebreathers.

A CCR changes the way we experience diving. Instead of constantly losing breathing gas into the environment, the system recycles it, allowing much longer dive times with significantly reduced gas consumption (assuming we don’t have to use our bailout gas). It provides warm, moist breathing gas, keeps the diver quiet, and dramatically reduces bubbles — something that can be a huge advantage for exploration, pe*******on diving, collecting data, wildlife encounters, photography, and videography.

However, a rebreather is not a magic solution. It adds complexity, requires a higher level of training, and demands discipline. More technology also means more things to understand, maintain, and manage. Choosing CCR simply because it is “more advanced” does not automatically make it the right choice.

The right question is not: “Which system is better?” but “Which tool is the best fit for this mission?”

Personally, I absolutely love CCR. It has changed the way I think about diving and opened possibilities that I never experienced on open circuit. If I could choose, I would probably take my rebreather on every single dive (no matter the depth), because I enjoy the experience so much.

But CCR is not a replacement for open circuit. It is another tool. Personal preference and the best tool for the mission are not always the same thing.

Technical diving is about understanding the strengths and limitations of every tool and choosing the one that allows you to accomplish the mission as safely and efficiently as possible.

My Cinematic Filming Process
I have received several inquiries about filming tips and advice. Here is my process simplified. Please note that it is specific to the environments I film in and the camera I use.

Underwater, I use either the Sony Alpha 1 or the Sony A7S III, paired with two Keldan 20k lumen video lights.
Above water, I also use the Sony FX6.

🎥 Does the Camera Matter?
For the environments I film in, yes. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve great results with an action camera.

🌁 “Flat Profile” Filming
One of the biggest advantages of using a pro camera is the ability to record in a dedicated gamma curve, such as S-Log3 (on Sony cameras), which captures a much wider dynamic range and more color information. It records a very flat, desaturated image, but allows for better color grading.

For simplicity (and because every manufacturer uses different names), I’ll refer to these gamma curves as a “flat profile.”

Most small/action cameras either don’t offer this option or provide only a limited implementation. If you shoot in a flat profile, color grading is must.

🌅 White Balance & Lighting
White balance is particularly important when filming in environments dominated by ambient light, where video lights have little or no effect. Unlike RAW photography, video records the white balance into the footage, so getting it right underwater is much more important. You should white balance every few meters.

If you’re filming in a standard picture profile (not flat), white balance is even more critical.

In darker environments, below approx 40 meters, or inside canyons, caverns, caves, and wrecks, I usually don’t white balance. This is where lights kick in. Mastering light work takes practice.

🌄 Color Grading
Color grading is an essential part of cinematography. It’s the final ingredient that gives a clip its character. If you film with an action camera or without using a flat profile, your options during color grading become much more limited.

Color grading doesn’t mean your footage has to look unnatural or heavily edited. How much you choose to alter the image is entirely an artistic decision.
