AGBU Demirdjian Center’s Armenian Studies Saturday School commemorated the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Students honored the memory of our martyrs with a visit to the Martyrs’ Church in Antelias, where they laid flowers in remembrance of the victims of 1915.

We are proud to be Armenian.

Blessed is the Resurrection of Christ! AGBU wishes everyone a safe and happy Easter and good fortune for the future.

Good Friday is the most sacred day of the Christian calendar, and Christians worldwide commemorate Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, death, and burial. As the holiest of days, it is observed in a highly dignified and solemn manner and is a time without work or amusement. In the evening, a symbolic entombment or burial ceremony is performed, and a re-creation of Christ’s holy burial site is placed in the Church.

When services end, the faithful visit the tomb to offer prayers and take a flower home to honor our Lord’s sacrifice.

Today is Maundy Thursday, the fifth day of Holy Week. This day is dedicated to Christ’s teachings during the Last Supper, the establishment of Holy Communion, and his display of humility by washing his disciples’ feet.

Every year, Armenian Churches worldwide conduct three special ceremonies throughout the day to celebrate the events and Christ’s essential messages throughout the Last Supper. First, the Divine Liturgy is performed in the morning, followed by the Washing of the Feet service in the early evening. Finally, during the third and final ceremony, a vigil represents Christ’s last sleepless night on earth.

Palm Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday before Easter and marks the beginning of Holy Week. Christians commemorate this day with Jesus Christ’s triumphant last entry into Jerusalem five days before his death. Armenian churches are decorated with blessed palms and olive tree branches and distributed to the faithful on this day. After church ceremonies, the palms and willow branches are folded into cross shapes and kept in homes for one year until the next Palm Sunday.
