A Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV), also known as an underwater scooter, is a motorized device that helps divers move through the water with less effort. It pulls the diver along, reducing air consumption, extending range, and allowing exploration of larger areas such as caves, wrecks, or reefs. DPVs are commonly used in technical, cave, and wreck diving, but they can also be helpful in recreational diving for covering long distances or managing strong currents.

Throughout all our technical and cave diving training, theory is always taught on land and exercises are practiced in confined water. Afterwards, dives are carried out where students must demonstrate the efficiency and performance of the skills practiced in confined water.

This time I'm sharing this video I recorded a few years ago at the Naitucha cenote with my friends Alberto and Jim, who helped me out by modeling their scooters. In this particular cave, you can see many formations and a very light rock color, which makes the diving spectacular. We used around 30,000 lumens of light and a Nikon camera with a Sea & Sea housing. At that time, we used Silent-submerge and a Halcyon scooters if I remember correctly. I hope you enjoy the video.

In the cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula, the halocline is one of the most fascinating natural phenomena divers can experience.

A halocline forms where freshwater from rain and underground rivers meets the denser saltwater from the ocean. Because of the density difference, the two layers don’t immediately mix. Instead, they create a distinct separation—almost like oil floating on water.

Here’s what makes it special in cenote diving:

Visual Effect: When a diver passes through the halocline, the layers mix temporarily, producing a shimmering or blurry distortion, similar to a heat mirage. This can make vision appear wavy or cloudy until the water settles again.
Temperature & Buoyancy Changes: Sometimes, divers feel a slight shift in temperature or buoyancy as they cross between fresh and salt water layers.
Depth: In many cenotes, the halocline can be found at 10 to 15 meters depth, but the exact depth varies depending on the system and time of year.
Unique Ecosystem: The separation of fresh and salt water creates distinct environments for different types of organisms, making cenotes biologically diverse.

For divers, encountering the halocline is not only a surreal visual experience, but also a reminder of the cenotes’ geological and hydrological connection to both land and sea.
