WKF Kata Rules: Before vs. 2026

1. Judging by Majority Vote (not numeric scores)
• Before: Kata was scored by judges giving numerical points, which were summed and often publicly displayed.
• Now: Winners are determined by referee majority decision. No public numbers.
• Impact: Judges focus on overall quality rather than point totals (small errors or theatrics can influence the majority vote differently than a point system).

2. Kata Name Announcement
• Before: Often optional in tournaments.
• Now: Must be clearly announced before performance. Failure to do so may lead to penalties.

3. Clear Kiai Enforcement
• Before: Kiai was encouraged but inconsistently enforced.
• Now: Strong, proper kiai is mandatory, judges can deduct points or even disqualify if not performed correctly.

4. Excessive theatrics and striking restrictions
• Before: Some dramatic elements and mat/body strikes were tolerated, especially in high-level competitions.
• Now: Over-the-top theatrics or deliberate strikes of the body/gi/floor are explicitly prohibited, with penalties clearly defined.
