Hamilton Sambo is a member of the New Zealand Sambo Federation.
With our experienced referees, coaches, and internationally renowned athletes, we provide a pathway from novice to international athlete or official.
3 Weeks To Go
With just three weeks remaining until the Asia Oceania Sambo Championships in Manila, preparation is becoming increasingly specific.
The focus now is simple:
• Competition conditioning
• Match simulation
• Tactical repetition
• Ruleset awareness
• Game plan ex*****on
Both athletes now have clear competition strategies and training is centred around applying those plans under pressure.
One of the biggest improvements throughout camp has been confidence in the Sambo ruleset. The better athletes understand scoring opportunities and match management, the more freedom they have to attack and express their skills.
Match intensity has been high, with strong rounds and valuable feedback from a continental-level referee helping prepare athletes for the realities of international competition.
Saturday's session focused on explosive takedown development, using crash mats to allow athletes to fully commit to powerful finishes while keeping training partners safe.
Outside the competition environment, both athletes continue volunteering with Kimura Kiwis and supporting younger members of the martial arts community.
The video from this week captures something important: a cadet athlete training alongside international representatives.
Strong pathways are built when younger athletes can learn directly from those preparing for major events.
Combat Sambo continues to provide opportunities for athletes from MMA, wrestling, judo, and other combat sports backgrounds to test themselves in a unique international environment.
Looking beyond Manila, attention is already beginning to shift toward developing the next group of U20 athletes targeting future international events, including the Junior World Championships.
Until departure on June 24, Wednesday evening sessions remain FREE for anyone interested in experiencing Sambo training for the first time.
The goal remains the same:
Represent New Zealand with professionalism, courage, and technical excellence.

4 Weeks To Go 🇳🇿
Preparation for the Asia Oceania Sambo Championships has shifted fully toward competition ex*****on.
No new moves.
No unnecessary complexity.
Just:
• fast grips
• clean setups
• tactical repetition
• full-rules rounds
• game plan development
Training sessions are becoming shorter, sharper, and more specific as athletes prepare for Manila on June 24th.
Match footage and tactical analysis now play a bigger role than experimentation. At this stage, efficiency matters more than volume.
One of the best parts of this camp has been the variety of athletes and martial arts backgrounds contributing to sessions. Different styles create different problems, and that’s where growth happens.
A recovery Sunday this week also gave bodies a chance to absorb the workload after several demanding weeks of preparation.
Most importantly, individual game plans are starting to emerge.
Sambo continues to offer a unique pathway for athletes looking to develop:
• wrestling
• submissions
• striking integration
• tactical adaptability
• composure under pressure
Constant technical support from Master Abdullah has remained an important part of the process throughout camp.
The goal remains the same:
prepare athletes to represent New Zealand with professionalism and courage on the international stage.
