Hinuera celebrated our 2026 Senior Awards Night last night at the Matamata Civic Centre. As always, it was an absolute pleasure to see you all, and for those who were unable to make it, you were missed.

The club van has been on quite a few adventures over the past couple of weeks!

First up, it headed off to AIMS Games as the vehicle of choice for the Matamata Intermediate hockey team.

Then it was off to Ohaupo with some of our Waikato Divisional XV lads for their final game of the season, and they came home with the silverware! Congratulations boys, what a way to finish! 🙌

And yesterday, Club Manager Pam was channelling her inner Angie from Landman (iykyk 😂), taking some of the folks from Rangiura Retirement Village to the Matamata Races.

The winnings may not have been huge, but the smiles certainly were! A fantastic day was had by all, with plenty of laughs and good times along the way. 😁

We might be a rugby club, but we’re so much more than rugby. Hinuera is about our people, our whānau and our community, and we love being able to put our facilities, resources and club spirit to use wherever we can.

A great day of rugby for Waikato Divisional XV and our Hinuera boys 🖤💛

Our five colts boys Nathan Fladgate, Logan Alexander, Aidan Wassell-Goldsmith, Brooke Daisley, and Pire Poi Wilson. Although falling short against the invitational Colts team, the lads played some good Grassroots footy.

Our Senior boys had their last Divisional game against King Country, with our very own Ryan Johnston (RJ) racking up 4 tries to seal number one for the Northern Region Divisional competition, and Ricky Davis putting in the shift for the full 80 👏

Of course, a huge thank you to Alistair and Sooty who worked behind the scenes for our Senior Divisional team - your mahi is greatly appreciated 🖤💛

Matamata College

Matamata College made the step up to the Central North Island (CNI) competition for the first time this year and performed respectably by winning three matches.
Tight head prop and co-captain Patrick Keenan, a First XV player since Year 10, helped ensure Matamata weren’t easy beats by earning the most points by a prop in the Jordie Barrett Best and Fairest Medal standings. In August, he was selected for the Waikato U18 squad.

Coach and New Zealand Heartland XV representative Logan Williams, who’s pushed Matamata’s departure from the Waikato competition to the more lucrative Taine Randall Cup, emphasised Keenan has been a massive part of Matamata’s growing ambition.

“He plays 70 minutes most weeks, despite shoulder surgery,” Williams said. “He’s mobile, tough, rarely bettered in the scrums and a real leader.”

“In fact, he goes against the stereotype of props in that he’s really intelligent. He was in Auckland recently, invited to consider some sort of scholarship involving neurological brain studies. I wouldn’t know the half of it,” the coach laughed.
Keenan’s two brothers, Casper and Darcy Keenan, have also played in the front row for Matamata.

Meanwhile, St Paul’s Collegiate, who won the CNI for the eighth time since 2014, but for the first time since 2021, also had a trio of front-rowers who had the measure of most in Chris Kahotea, Lucas Hull and George Kennedy.
