It's been great talking with Senpai Furuta while he's visiting NZ. I was inspired by a story he told me that I wanted to share about Senpai Sadao Sakai, a 59kg 157cm fighter who fought in open weight tournaments against much heavier opponents. He had a unique defensive style, holding his guard out far using circular footwork (Sabaki) to fight. Due to his light weight, he truly feared his bigger opponents, so to prepare mentally, he would write his will / testament before each tournament, preparing himself to fight to the end. Senpai Sakai fought out of the Jonan Dojo, home to world champions such as Midori, Yamaki and Kazumi. In this match, he meets Kancho Matsui 86kg in the 4th round of the All Japan Weight tournament. Putting him amongst the top 16 fighters of Japan that year.
