In the bustling city of Chennai, a young boy named Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa discovered the magic of 64 squares at the tender age of five. Introduced to the game as a way to curb his television watching, little did his parents know they had ignited a spark that would soon blaze into a phenomenal career.
Under the watchful guidance of his first coach, S. Thyagarajan, and later Grandmaster R.B. Ramesh, Pragg, as he is fondly called, absorbed the intricacies of chess with astonishing speed. His dedication was unwavering, spending hours honing his skills, his young mind already grasping complex strategies that eluded many seasoned players.
His talent shone brightly as he clinched the World Youth Chess Championship Under-8 title in 2013, earning him the FIDE Master title. Not content with this early success, he continued his relentless pursuit, winning the Under-10 title in 2015.
Then came the historic moment in 2016. At just 10 years, 10 months, and 19 days, Pragg became the youngest International Master in history, a record that stood as a testament to his extraordinary aptitude for the game.
The chess world watched in awe as the young Indian prodigy continued his ascent. In 2018, at the age of 12 years, 10 months, and 13 days, Praggnanandhaa achieved the coveted title of Grandmaster, becoming the second-youngest in history at that time.
Pragg's journey is not just about breaking records; it's a story of passion, perseverance, and the unwavering support of his family. His mother, Nagalakshmi, has been his constant companion, traveling with him to tournaments, ensuring he remains grounded amidst the whirlwind of his achievements.
From a young boy captivated by the black and white squares to a Grandmaster prodigy representing India on the global stage, Praggnanandhaa's inspiring story reminds us that with dedication and a burning desire, even the loftiest goals are within reach, regardless of age or background. He continues to inspire a generation of young chess players in India and beyond, proving that the spirit of a champion can ignite at any age.
