Among Filipino bike mechanics, plato is commonly used to refer to the bike’s chainring—the toothed ring attached to the crank that engages with the chain and helps turn your pedaling into motion.

It’s a small example of how language evolves in everyday life. Technical terms get adapted, localized, and made easier to understand. In this case, the flat, round shape of a chainring became familiar enough to earn a Filipino name: plato.
