At that point, the question is no longer just, “Are you taking enough iron?” It may be: Are you absorbing it properly?

Iron absorption can be affected by digestive conditions, low stomach acid, certain medications, inflammation, or conditions like celiac disease. Even the form of iron and what you take it with can make a difference.

So if your iron keeps coming back low despite supplementing, simply increasing the dose may not solve the real issue.

Sometimes the lab result is telling us to look at what is happening between the supplement and the bloodstream.

If low iron keeps returning, book a consultation with our team. We can look more closely at absorption, possible losses, and why your levels are not staying where they should.

It may not be the food itself. It may be how your digestive system is tolerating it. Raw produce can be harder to break down for some people, especially in larger amounts. Certain fibres and plant compounds may contribute to more gas or digestive discomfort when the gut is already sensitive.

Cooking changes the structure of plant fibres, making many vegetables softer and easier to tolerate while still providing valuable nutrients.

If raw foods tend to leave you uncomfortable, try:

• Roasting or steaming vegetables
• Choosing soups and stews
• Sautéing greens
• Blending vegetables into soups or sauces
• Starting with smaller portions and building up gradually

The goal is to understand what your digestive system tolerates well, while also exploring why certain foods may be harder to digest in the first place.

If I packed lunch every day...
Here's what I'd stop overthinking People often ask, "What's the perfect lunch?" Honestly...

There isn't one.

Instead. Think balance. Protein. Fiber. Healthy fats. Color.

Simple meals can still be nourishing.

Build your lunch around what helps you feel energized.

Protein is important for muscle maintenance, recovery, blood sugar stability, satiety, healthy aging, and many other functions. The amount you need depends on factors like your body size, age, activity level, health status, and goals.

For many adults, the basic RDA of 0.8 g/kg/day is best viewed as a minimum to prevent deficiency, not necessarily an ideal target for every person. Active adults, older adults, and those trying to preserve or build muscle may benefit from higher intakes, often in the range of roughly 1.2 to 1.6 g/kg/day depending on the individual.

But protein is only one part of the picture.

If increasing protein pushes out fibre, plants, healthy fats, or overall food variety, the diet can become less balanced. Digestion, kidney function, appetite, total calorie intake, and the quality of your protein sources matter too.

The goal is enough protein to support your needs, spread throughout the day, alongside a nutrient-dense and diverse diet.

Why? Because nutrient status is about more than what is on your plate.

We also look at whether your body is actually absorbing and using those nutrients well.

A few things that can matter:

Intake: Sometimes a person simply is not getting enough of a particular nutrient, especially with restrictive diets, low appetite, or limited food variety.
Absorption: Digestive conditions, reduced stomach acid, intestinal inflammation, or changes in gut function can affect how well nutrients are absorbed.
Medications: Some medications can influence the absorption or metabolism of nutrients, which may become more relevant with long-term use.
Increased needs: Pregnancy, intense training, illness, recovery, and certain life stages can increase nutrient requirements.
Chronic blood loss: Heavy menstrual bleeding or gastrointestinal blood loss can gradually deplete nutrients such as iron.

This is why a low nutrient level should not automatically be interpreted as “you need to eat better.”

🎃 The skeletons can stay. The one-size-fits-all healthcare claims can go. The louder and more universal the promise, the more questions I tend to have.
One symptom rarely establishes an entire diagnosis.
One test rarely explains an entire person.
And one supplement rarely fixes every complicated case that happens to scroll past the same ad. Good clinical reasoning is usually less dramatic.

It asks better questions. Looks for patterns. Tests ideas. Changes course when the evidence does. Not as exciting as “THIS ONE WEIRD TRICK.” Much more useful.

Generic trigger lists can be useful places to start. They are terrible places to stop thinking. If you remove every food that has ever triggered a migraine in somebody somewhere, you may end up with an incredibly restrictive diet and still not understand your own migraines.

If you suspect a trigger, pay attention to it. Track it. Look for repetition. But your plan should be built around your pattern, not the internet’s collective migraine history.

Iron and nutrient deficiencies, thyroid function, blood sugar regulation, hormonal changes, stress, poor sleep, dehydration, and even conditions like POTS can all create surprisingly similar symptoms.

So how do you know what’s actually worth looking into?

In our latest blog, we break down 8 possible reasons you may feel tired, foggy, and lightheaded, along with the patterns that can offer important clues about what your body may be trying to tell you.

Read our latest blog here:

By mid-morning, concentrating feels harder than it should. You stand up from your desk and feel a little lightheaded. Your energy crashes in the afternoon, and sometimes you feel shaky, weak, or simply “off.”

Trigger tracking can be helpful. Trigger blaming is less helpful. The difference is whether you are looking for a repeated pattern or permanently banning the last thing you touched before your head started hurting.

One migraine after chocolate does not automatically mean chocolate explains your migraines. Look wider. Then look for repetition. That is how information becomes useful.

When someone tells me they have migraines, I want the story around the migraine. What happens before it? What does the headache actually feel like, light sensitivity, nausea, visual changes, neck tension? Timing around the menstrual cycle? Missed meals? Poor sleep? Medications? What happens afterward?

One of the most useful things a patient can do is stop summarizing the entire experience as “bad headaches.” Describe the pattern. That is where the useful information lives.
