Yoga Sutra 1.2 defines yoga in four words:
Yogas chitta vritti nirodha. These four Sanskrit terms translate as: yoga, mind, fluctuations, stilling. Patanjali wrote 196 sutras total, and only three aphorisms address physical postures.

Even those three say almost nothing about what the poses should look like or how long to hold them. His attention stayed on the mind, not the body, and this sutra that defines the word yoga reflects his approach.
