Yesterday Dana Kay posted some fine prep work on a frame and slide showcasing the flats. While we aren't sure exactly how she achieved hers, we decided to show you how we approach similar projects to keep the flat surfaces flat, the edges crisp, and the stamps perfect. So years ago we made a work bench drawer with a recessed lid. We had 1/4" plate glass cut to fit the recess. Inside we have a stack of glass and each piece has wet/dry sandpaper of different grits taped to it. We also have a piece of soft paint grade plywood that is coated in metal polish for when we want a mirror finish. Its an easy way to keep everything together for polishing flats.....now maybe Dana Kay will share how she achieved hers.......

We talked about screwdrivers/turnscrews and the importance of proper fit. Now lets look at what they turn. The screws on any fine firearm should be "clocked" or "timed" such that the slots run in line with the length of the gun. So on the sides the screw slots should be horizontal when the firearm is leveled as depicted in the Westley Richards & Co. Ltd. SLE, both the AYA-Aguirre y Aranzabal model , and the Longthorne Gunmakers . On the bottom or top the screw slots should run longitudinal as depicted on the AYA-Aguirre y Aranzabal , Merkel Jagd - und Sportwaffen , and Longthorne Gunmakers .
This serves the "functional" purpose of allowing one to know all screws are tight at a glance.
It serves the "form" purpose of looking more elegant and purposefully finished.
Since every fine firearm should be the perfect mating of form and function, this is an aspect not to be overlooked.

Screwdrivers/turnscrews......something commonly overlooked. Good ones should be hollow/parallel ground. They should be tempered hard enough to impart good torque but soft enough to twist just a touch before they break. They should be ground to fit the screw slot perfectly, to fill the width of the slot and its thickness and go just to the bottom of the slot. When ground properly they won't bu**er screw heads. There are several commercial sets about the shop but more often than not we use ones we make. Hardened chisels from the local ACE hardware driven into short blocks of scrap hardwood laying around and then ground to shape at time of use. The temper on these is near perfect so we keep them cool while grinding. Once you've made 50-60 you can generally find one to fit most any firearm application.

This beautiful Perugini Visini shotgun came in with misfire issues. New pins were in order. The client shoots A LOT and keeps spares available. But since all these guns are hand fit and finished the new pins took just a touch of deburring and radiusing to make them function.
