Ziggy is a mini Aussiedoodle and he is completely convinced he's crew.

The job, as he understands it: greet every guest at the ladder, work the cockpit for pets, supervise the charcuterie, then sleep through the entire snorkel stop. He takes all of it very seriously.

Half days and full days both get a snorkel stop. The 2-hour sunset sail doesn't, which is the only trade in the whole lineup.

There's a moment on every full day where the diesel goes quiet and nobody says anything for a while.

Six years, one boat, and the same face at the wheel every trip.

I wear most of the hats. Captain, bookings, the ads, the ice run, and the cleanup after everybody goes home happy. What I don't do is run the day alone. Crew is aboard on almost every trip, most of them hold licenses of their own, and they are the reason your glass never runs empty while I'm busy sailing.

So when you book Asante you get me and a first mate, every trip. And no, I don't mean Ziggy.

Where's Asante? Up on stilts in Fajardo, wearing a year of the Caribbean on her bottom and not one bit embarrassed about it.

New bottom, fresh paint, and the rest of the annual list. A couple of months of sanding dust so she's right by November.
