Also, registration emails for the 2027 winter session will be going out at the beginning of December. Winter session dates are: February 8 through March 31 (no class on March 22, 23, 24).

Please note that pricing will be changing in 2027.

Students have been practicing working on their turnarounds in the water. That way if they fall off the step they know how to get back to safety independently.

Goggles are very useful for learning how to swim. They help motivate you to look under water longer, which helps you practice breath control. They also encourage you to keep your head down, which is the ideal position that is needed in order to swim and float properly (and with ease).

What I learned about ten years (!) into my 23+ year career is that it’s just as important to know how to swim without them. A mother brought her kid to our weekly class and mentioned that he had fallen into a pool over the weekend. Everything he had learned to do independently in the water was forgotten in that moment because he panicked without goggles on. He was only used to swimming with them.

A light bulb clicked on for me. From then on I made sure to have all of my students practice with AND without goggles. We also talk about why that is so they understand I’m not trying to cause them gentle discomfort without reason.

No matter how many years I’ve taught, there’s always more to learn.

I am beyond proud of all of my students this year. Every single one of them has made progress. All of it counts, big and small, no matter if they’re overcoming fear, water trauma, separation anxiety, or understanding how their body works in the water.

They have been working so hard, but they just don’t know it because we “only play games” in class. 😉

My dear, incredible community of Bend,

I am so very sorry for all that we are going through right now, most especially those directly affected. It is unfathomable. Please know it’s okay to feel however you’re feeling. Terrified, angry, unsafe, devastated, overwhelmed. It’s all valid.

In the days and months and years after this tragedy let us keep showing up for one another. Grant people space when they need it, but keep checking in. Grief is long term and we must hold onto each other along the way.

There are numerous ways to offer support today and in the future. Give your choosing of time, donations, advocacy, a listening ear, unlimited hugs, and fierce kindness. Even small gestures can have a huge impact. If you feel so inclined, join me in donating to Sandy Hook Promise, or any other organization you feel called to in light of this. It doesn’t offer an immediate fix, but every effort is impactful.

In honor of Silver Rail Elementary and every child who grows up in a world where school shootings are a reality, keep showing up. May we hold them close and diligently work to make the world a safer place for us all.

Waitlisted families will receive the registration email in a couple days.

Hello Happy Sharks,

A few days ago there was a house fire in Bend. I just learned that one of the families affected are previous students of mine. They lost everything and are in the thick of dealing with the aftermath: grief, finding new housing, going through the motions of day to day life, replacing what was lost, etc.
