Berkeley Capoeira Collective
Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian artform with martial arts, music, dance, and other cultural elements. It is rooted in resistance against oppression. And it's fun!
It is a tool for personal and social transformation. Come play with us.
Every 3rd Sunday of the month! BIPOC capoeira community, join us in celebration through movement, song, conversation, food, and joy. Sunday, July 19th from 11:00am-1:30pm in the community room at La Peña Cultural Center La Peña Cultural Center (3105 Shattuck Avenue, Ohlone Territory).
* Start with a music jam/practice circle
* Jogos
* Roda
This space welcomes Black, Indigenous, and People of Color to play - to sing, to dance, to struggle, to laugh, to feel, to find our alignments and differences - in the space of capoeira.
We encourage families to bring their little ones - we’ll have a kids’ corner!
……………….
We believe that ALL spaces are affinity spaces. In other words, every space attracts and centers certain kinds of people who share similar identities and/or characteristics (whether racial, gender, political, etc.). Some spaces are intentional about the people they center, and others are affinity spaces by default. Intentional affinity spaces can be powerful, especially for folks who have been excluded from process, power, and place. They aren’t divisive - on the contrary, they name and attempt to address divisions that already exist. They can help us to build back the resources, joy, connection, and sense of self we need to continue showing up in the world.

Follow the link on News Up NOW ‘s profile to watch the mini story talking about capoeira in the Bay Area. PS: Tako asked us to clarify he is not the mestre of Berkeley Capoeira Collective lol.
