⚽️ THROWBACK THURSDAY! ✈️

Taking it back to June 2023 and our referee delegation heading to the Farwest Regionals in Boise, Idaho!

Before the tournament even began, our referees received a special surprise sendoff from Southwest Airlines, courtesy of SRC member Penny Rehm and her friends at Southwest.

And to make the sendoff even more special, Southwest’s mascot was there to greet them.

It was the perfect way to kick off the tournament and send our referees off with some extra excitement and appreciation!

It was a memorable start to an unforgettable Farwest Regionals!

Great turnout at CORE in Torrance!

We had an amazing group of referees join us for another awesome CORE session. A big thank you to Kia Dehpanah for making the trip all the way from San Diego to Torrance to be with us! The presentation was informative, engaging, and a great night of learning and sharing.

Thanks to everyone who came out and made it another great CORE session!

With the appointment of Brian Hall as our new SDI, we want to take a moment to say a HUGE thank you to Lee Eichenbaum for his many years of dedication and service as our former SDI.

Lee stepped down a few months ago to spend more time with his family, and we’re so grateful for everything he has done for our referee community.

While Lee is no longer on the Referee Committee, he’s definitely not going anywhere! He continues to be an active Referee Coach and referee, so we’ll be seeing plenty of him on the fields.

Thank you, Lee, for your leadership, support, friendship, and all the time you’ve given to our referees. We appreciate you!

National Referee Coach Spotlight: Ali Hacock.

Ali became a referee coach to give back to the game that has given him so much. Great people, lasting friendships, and an incredible community.

What Ali enjoys most is building relationships, sharing experiences, and helping officials grow both on and off the field.

One of his proudest moments was seeing Frank Anderson selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He was incredibly proud and cried tears of joy!

Ali’s advice to referees: Be patient, stay humble, work hard, keep learning, and enjoy the journey.

“Stay committed, stay passionate, and most importantly, enjoy the journey. The opportunities will come.”

August Referee Spotlight: Edwar Hernandez

In 2007, Edwar said “Me!” when a local referee assignor asked who wanted to make some weekend money refereeing. He had no idea that simple decision would become a lifelong journey. From nervous first games to traveling across nearly 20 states and abroad, working USYS National Championships and major tournaments, refereeing has given Edwar incredible experiences, friendships, mentors, and opportunities.

One of Edwar’s biggest inspirations has been Ismail Elfath. Since 2017, Edwar has followed and studied his matches, learning from his poise, authority, fitness, and professionalism at the highest level.

Edwar is also deeply grateful to Juan Guzmán Jr. and the State Referee Committee for their leadership, mentorship, support, and commitment to referee development. Their influence has played an important role in his growth both on and off the field.

Being named 2021 Cal South Male Referee of the Year and selected for the 2021 USYS National Presidents Cup were milestones that helped Edwar believe professional refereeing was possible.

His advice: Be a student of the game. Stay humble. Keep learning. Develop not only as a referee, but as a person.
Because a badge shows how far you’ve come, but your character determines what it stands for.

Join us for the September 15 CORE session as we welcome National Referee Coach Kia Dehpanah who will share “The Art of Refereeing and Managing Games at Different Levels.”

Refereeing is more than applying the Laws of the Game. Learn how to adapt your approach, communication, decision-making, and game management to different levels of play.

Whether you’re developing as a referee or working at the highest levels, this session will provide practical tools to help you manage the game—not just officiate it.
