TECH TUESDAY 💻📻

A good radio needs a good antenna setup.

Antenna placement matters more than a lot of people realize. Mounting one low behind the cab or right against a metal dog box can affect how well your setup performs.

A clear mounting location, solid mount and properly routed antenna cable all help your radio work the way it should.

Before you spend money on a more powerful radio, take a look at the antenna connected to it.

Equipment is important. Setup is everything.

SIGNAL CHECK SUNDAY 🧼📻

Radios get dirty.

Dust, dirt, moisture and grime can work their way into equipment and connectors over time.

Give your equipment a quick inspection and clean it properly when needed.

A little maintenance goes a long way.

Take care of your equipment and it’ll be there when you need it.

Here’s something that gets overlooked all the time:

THE COAX.

You can have a great radio and a great antenna, but damaged, poorly terminated, or improperly routed coax can still cause problems.

Your radio system is only as strong as its weakest part.

Sometimes the problem isn’t the radio… it’s what’s connecting everything together.

SIGNAL CHECK SUNDAY 📡

When was the last time you actually tested your radio system?

Don’t wait for an emergency or important call to find out how well it works.

Pick a few locations you regularly communicate from and test your coverage.

Know where your radio works — before you need to know.

TECH TUESDAY 📡

What’s this thing called SWR everyone keeps talking about?

SWR — Standing Wave Ratio — is one way of checking how well your antenna system is matched to your radio.

A poor match can mean lost performance and, depending on the equipment, potentially damage to the radio.

1.0:1 is the best possible
1.1-1.3 is really good
1.3-1.5 is nothing to worry about not the best but still can run it
2.0-3.0 is getting to the point of poor performance
3.0 and above is not good for the radio.

Don’t just install an antenna and forget it. Test it.

Getting more static than usual?

Don’t automatically assume the radio is going bad.

Check your antenna, connections, coax and power supply first.

Sometimes a small connection problem can create a big communication headache.

Troubleshoot the system — not just the radio.
Don’t know where to start give me a ring and I’ll help ya as much as possible. -Burnham Radio Solutions

Ever wonder why your radio says it can reach “X miles,” but you’re not getting anywhere close to that?

Radio range depends on much more than the radio itself.

Terrain, buildings, antenna height, antenna placement, frequency, power, interference and even weather conditions can affect your actual range.

There’s no magic number for radio range.

Your environment matters.
