All of the club champions have been crowned.
Unseeded William Arp took the Men's A Singles title with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over 2nd-seeded Will Cohen in the annual Scranton Tennis Club Championships. Arp was coasting, having won the first set and was up 3-0 in the second set when Cohen picked up his game and almost pulled out the second set. To reach the final Arp upended the defending champion Johnny Sinclair 7-6(2), 6-2 in one semifinal, while Cohen overpowered Alfred Betts 6-0, 6-2. Arp won the PIAA District 2 doubles championship this spring with Liam Farrell.
William's sister, Susan, struggled to win the first set against Amishi Amit, but upped her level in the second set to take the Women's A Singles title 7-5, 6-2. The semifinals followed script with top-seeded Arp knocking out Nicole Sinclair 6-4, 6-0 and 2nd-seeded Amit defeating Jody Jackman 6-1, 6-0. Susan Arp plays for Messiah University, while Amit is the #1 singles player for Abington Heights.
Tom Occhipinti won his second title in the tournament, defeating Mike Goffer 6-3, 6-1 in the final of the Men's B Singles event. He and Jack Strain defeated Kevin and Joe Vinson 6-4, 6-0 to take the Men's B Doubles title.
In the Men's A Doubles final Curtis Althouse repeated as STC Club Champion, pairing up with Steve Lehan to defeat William Arp and Roman Donnelly 6-3, 6-2. Althouse and Lehan, who last won together in 2019, crashed the net at every opportunity to keep their young opponents off balance. Arp and Donnelly are Abington Heights teammates. In semifinal action Althouse and Lehan overpowered Scott Wiss and Stephen Hague 6-0, 6-3, while William Arp and Roman Donnelly knocked out the top-seeded duo of John and Johnny Sinclair 6-2, 7-5.
The Arp family earned a third title when Kelly Arp, William and Susan's mother, paired with Amishi Amit to defeat Jody Jackman and Chris Lange 6-1, 6-1 in the Women's A Doubles final. Arp and Amit reached the final by upending the top-seeded duo of Susan Arp and Nicole Sinclair 6-4, 7-6, while Jackman and Lange barely got by Nicole Kutos and Chris Wiss 6-3, 4-6, (10-7).
In the Women's B Doubles final Sophia Castagnaro and Arpana Asawa outsteadied Joan Davis and Joan Theilgard 4-6, 6-2, (10-3) to take the title.
