Today’s photo is from 1962 and shows the Phi Kappa Alpha homecoming display in front of Johnstone Hall.

The photo was taken around November 3, 1962, when the Tigers hosted North Carolina for Homecoming.

As you can see, the display featured a series of gravestones commemorating Clemson’s recent victories over the Tar Heels—a pretty creative way to celebrate the rivalry!

Clemson would add another “tombstone” to the display that year, defeating North Carolina 17–6 on the way to a 6–4 season.

Since Clemson won the game, it affords me the opportunity to give this opinion without seeming as if I was blaming the weather delay for Clemson loss. In fact, delay benefited Clemson immensely!

A serious review of weather warnings needs to be looked into next offseason for all outdoor sports, including football.

Safety is, and should be, the #1 priority. But common sense and a human element is also important, and I don't feel like the system currently allows for common sense.

An 8-Mile-Wide Circumference for the standard needs common sense. An 8 mile circle encompasses 201.06 square miles and 128,679.64 acres! That is a huge swath!

Last week a fast-moving storm with lightning was headed directly for Memorial Stadium and we appropriately went into a delay.

But yesterday's storm was not moving at all, and if anything was inching away from Memorial Stadium. But, because lightning was in the 8-mile window, we had to delay.

A human element is needed to give situational perspective to what is going on instead of an 8 mile "no questions asked" delay.

On the flip side, if a southern storm front with severe weather were coming towards Memorial Stadium at 25 MPH, I would expect them to put us in a delay BEFORE lightening is spotted in 8-mile radius. And I bet you they would.

You can have a safe environment with standard mile radius detections, I'm just suggesting a human element is needed on some occasions, like yesterday.

Today’s photo is from the 1990s and features Howard’s Rock during pregame in Death Valley.

This is a great classic view of the Rock before the vandalism that occurred in 2013.

It also gives us a look at the old west end zone stands and scoreboard—another reminder of what Clemson’s Death Valley looked like during this era.

Trivia Question
During this era, Clemson ROTC would display a banner in the west end zone. If you look closely at the photo, you can faintly make it out.
