Helmet-mounted thermals and handheld thermals get lumped together a lot, but in my experience they serve very different purposes.

For me, these are like knives:
you don’t butcher a cow with a butter knife—and you don’t spread butter with a boning knife.

Helmet-mounted
• Excellent for hands-free movement and navigation
• Situational awareness while walking, stalking, or working
• Not something I personally want to scan with for long periods

Handheld
• Purpose-built for extended scanning
• Better ergonomics and fatigue management
• Where most target detection actually happens

Both have a place. One isn’t “better” universally—it’s about using the right tool for the job.
