All September, we celebrate neighborhood senior centers - wrapping up with the Healthy Aging Expo the last Friday of the month at beautiful Palmer Park

Detroit Area Agency on Aging, Detroit Parks & Recreation and St. Patrick Senior Center present a month-long campaign to raise awareness for Detroit’s neighborhood senior centers. Providing services, activities, fun and friendship, these centers play essential roles in the lives of thousands of Detroiters. Since many services and activities are temporarily suspended – including the Strides Walk at Palmer Park – the 2020 campaign is happening online.

The word "caregiver" often conjures up thoughts of a family member: a sandwich-generation child or an overwhelmed spouse.

But there are more than 2.4 million Americans who are quietly helping friends delay the need for social services or a nursing home despite having no blood or legal ties to them, according to a new study published by JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Mary Hase, 67, and her husband Bill care for their friend, Ed Niemi, just as they did for his late brother, who had multiple health problems. "It's just who we are," says Mary, who helps Nieme sort medications and clean house. Bill helps with yard work and nudges Ed — who can struggle with personal care — that it’s time to take a shower or change his clothes.

The findings are important in Michigan — a state aging faster than most others, reporter Robin Erb reports for partner Bridge Michigan.

🌿 August is National Wellness Month 💜

Wellness is more than a routine—it's about making time to care for your mind, body, and spirit.

Whether you're a caregiver, an older adult, or simply taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle, remember that even small acts of self-care can make a big difference. Prioritizing your well-being helps you continue showing up for the people and communities you love.

This month, take a moment to:
💜 Check in with yourself.
🌿 Move your body.
🧠 Prioritize your mental health.
🤝 Reach out for support when you need it.
✨ Celebrate the progress you're making—one day at a time.

Because you matter, your health matters, and your well-being matters.
