How often do you find yourself reacting rather than responding?

Do you notice when stress, pressure, or challenging situations trigger defensiveness, overreactions, or a loss of control?

I recently had an inspiring conversation with Dr. Eugene Choi, who shared insights into the influence of the fight-or-flight response in leadership and how it affects your relationships and success.

Understanding this biological response is crucial for anyone in a position of leadership, whether in business, the workplace, or family.

Recognizing and regulating the fight-or-flight response can be transformative, providing pathways to improved decision-making, healthier relationships, and more effective leadership.

The way you lead is influenced by more than you may realize.

Are you ready to better understand what is driving your reactions?

As a speaker I help audiences experience 5 powerful shifts:

Anxiety-driven behaviors are your nervous system’s way of trying to protect you
Anxiety is biological not a personal failure
Anxiety does not define you, but your actions will
You are not stuck, you are not broken, you are becoming
Positive thoughts in = exceptional results out

You are not stuck in an anxiety response loop. You have the God-given power and authority to renew your mind and transform your thinking to create new (positive) neural pathways in your brain.

Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn
Let’s break them down.

Fight: You become irritated. Instead of responding to others or situations, you overreact. Overreaction leads to greater shame, guilt, and relationship disruption. You experience a lack of peace and calm. Without calm, you don't feel confident. When you lack calm and confidence, you are inconsistent, and your relationships and career begin to backslide. And the cycle continues.

Flight: You run and avoid. Instead of doing the thing, having the necessary conversation, or setting the goal, you avoid responsibility and don’t take action. This creates additional stress and anxiety as negative emotions build, and the cycle of nervous system dysregulation continues.

Freeze: You feel stuck. You cannot process information effectively to move forward. You stay stuck in indecision and inaction regarding goals and relationships.

Fawn: People-pleasing becomes part of your identity. Instead of making decisions for yourself, you are solely focused on what will make others happy and what others will think and feel about you and your decisions.

What does calm, confident, and consistent leadership look like?

In this solo episode, Part 7 of a 7-Part Series, I share insights on the Calm, Confident, Consistent Leadership Loop and what the research and Scripture reveal for Christian women in leadership.

The Dual Leadership Loop Model™ was developed specifically for Christian women in leadership in executive roles, entrepreneurship, and as parents. Research confirms that calm, confidence, and consistency are not personality traits reserved for a few naturally gifted leaders.

Each pillar of the loop is distinct, yet together they provide a framework for stronger leadership and greater effectiveness.

Are you ready to cultivate calm, confidence, and consistency in the way you lead?

Anxiety is not a personality flaw. It is biological.
Epigenetics and genetics in addition to life experiences influence a person’s risk of developing anxiety.

Anxiety is your nervous system's way of protecting you. When you learn to regulate your nervous system, you will begin to feel safe and be able to access your prefrontal cortex and understand that anxiety is not telling the truth. It is telling you to be fearful.

Ask yourself:

Am I safe?
Do I feel safe?

Then take a deep breath in through your nose for 4 to 8 counts, hold it for 4 to 8 counts, and give a big exhale through your mouth for 4 to 8 counts.

Now, how do you feel?

Do you find yourself avoiding difficult conversations?
Do you become defensive or overreact in situations that leave you wondering why you responded the way you did?

Avoidance, defensiveness, and overreacting are all expressions of the anxiety response loop at work. Each behavior is rooted in a dysregulated nervous system. Each one is driven by the same biological survival mechanism. And each one, when chronic, erodes relationships, diminishes leadership effectiveness, and ultimately contributes to burnout.

In this solo episode, Part 6 of the 7-Part Series, I discuss how these behaviors influence leadership and why they often stem from anxiety rather than the circumstances themselves.

When you break through anxiety, however, you shift the pendulum and can lead with calm, confidence, and consistency.

The question is, are you ready to identify the patterns that are keeping you stuck so you can lead with greater calm, confidence, and consistency?
