Balance training doesn’t need to look like a circus act to be effective!

Do: Challenge your base of support, change positions, incorporate movement, build strength, and progressively introduce situations that require you to react and regain control.

Don’t: Make an exercise so unstable that you can’t produce quality movement or confuse wobbling, shaking, and nearly falling over with progress.

Good balance is more than standing on one leg. It’s your ability to control your body, respond to your environment, and recover when something doesn’t go according to plan.

Train balance for life // not for the highlight reel.

The exercises that prepare us to move well rarely get filmed, posted, or bragged about but that doesn’t make them any less important. A purposeful warm-up should prepare the joints, tissues, nervous system, and movement patterns for what you’re about to ask your body to do.

When the workout starts, you should be ready to train, not spending the first 3–5 sets trying to finally feel ready to move.

The simple things aren’t always exciting. They’re what allow the exciting things to happen.

Ego lifting is more prevalent than people think. We often attribute it to someone lifting weights who is just trying to show off, as opposed to the everyday exercise enthusiast. However, the latter is the culprit significantly more often.

There is a misconception that if you’re not always lifting the heaviest or moving the fastest you’ve done, then you’re not getting any benefit, and that’s crazy! It is IMPERATIVE that you always achieve the fullest range of motion (ROM) assigned to the movement while maintaining the most beneficial body position.

This shows up in squats, lunges, pushups, overhead presses, 1/2 kneeling positions, rows, etc. If you can think of an exercise right now, I guarantee you it is often executed as ego lifting.

You don’t NEED that! You just need your consistency, and you want to keep moving. You got this.

Measure health by what your body can do and what’s happening inside it, not simply by what it looks like.

Body weight and BMI can provide information, but they don’t tell the whole story. Someone in a smaller body can have poor metabolic health, while someone with a higher BMI can have excellent blood work, strong cardiovascular fitness, healthy habits, and plenty of strength.

Health is bigger than a number on the scale.

Look deeper: blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides, cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, body composition, sleep quality, daily movement, nutrition, and mental/social well-being.
Measure health by what your body can do and what’s happening inside it—not simply by what it looks like.

What should you pay attention to, you ask?

1) Blood pressure
2) Blood glucose / HbA1c
3) Blood lipids // triglycerides, HDL, LDL/non-HDL; ApoB when appropriate
4) Cardiorespiratory fitness  // VO₂ max or another practical aerobic-fitness measure
5) Muscular strength
6) Resting heart rate / cardiovascular response
7) Sleep quality & quantity
8) Daily physical activity & sedentary time
9) Nutrition, stress, and overall well-being
10) Body composition & waist circumference // rather than weight alone
