La Mujer Obrera is an internationally acclaimed & award winning, 40 year old grassroots organization dedicated to development and advocacy in defense and recognition of Mexican migrant women workers’ heritage, rights and contributions. A private, non-profit 501c3 membership organization, La Mujer Obrera is comprised of low-income people living and working in El Paso, Texas, particularly displaced women workers and Spanish-speaking community members. Our mission is to improve the economic, social, educational, health and living conditions of low-income Hispanic families, while helping revitalize the former Garment District where many women and their families worked before NAFTA led to the loss of 35,000 jobs, mainly in the manufacturing sector of the economy. Since 1981, displaced garment workers of La Mujer Obrera have steadfastly organized to establish education and workforce training opportunities including a workers’ training center, an apartment complex, and three social purpose businesses: Rayito de Sol Daycare and Learning Center, Café Mayapán, and most recently, Mercado Mayapan, a traditional Mexican market with fresh foods, artisan goods, an active cultural events plaza, and museum. La Mujer Obrera’s community development model is ecological, community-led, and leading to full community empowerment and self-sufficiency. On Saturday, September 26, 2026 La Mujer Obrera, Border Network for Human Rights & Alianza Nacional de Campesinas will join communities across the country who will come together for 60 MILLION SURVIVORS RISING, a national day of action to demand justice, accountability, healing, and transformation for survivors of sexual violence and abuse.

The community is invited to attend a panel discussion about creating safe spaces & transforming relationships through community-building & cultural arts to combat the invisibility and abuse faced by women immigrants in the fields, detention centers & barrio neighborhoods. Speakers include: Lorena Andrade, Director of La Mujer Obrera, Irma Cruz, Community Organizer w/ Border Network for Human Rights, and Mily Treviño-Sauceda, Executive Director & Co-founder, Alianza Nacional de Campesinas on September, 26 at 10AM at Cafe Mayapan, 2000 Texas Ave.

Through Sembrando el Futuro we’re focusing on expanding LMO youth’s opportunities to learn from and be part of the collective decision making process we’re building in barrio Chamizal. This summer we’re exploring the importance of water in our region, learning our role in the ecosystem and cooking delicious, nutritious food together in our outdoor kitchen 😋

Today’s recuerdo de resistencia reminds us of the legacy women garment workers

In cities like El Paso we often lack opportunities to learn our own history, we have to go out searching for it and piece it together ourselves. An often forgotten part of this history is the factory garment workers who formed a foundational piece of El Paso’s economy, paving the way for worker’s rights and a generation of economic stability. This video reminds us of a living history not limited to words in a book, these are the stories of our mothers, grandmothers, and neighbors. The vision for a dignified life rooted in our basic needs outlined by the workers that have made up La Mujer Obrera since its founding continue to shape our organization to this day as we work to keep their stories and lessons alive in barrio Chamizal.

Some shots of our community farm, Tierra es Vida, getting water from the Rio Grande this week!

Throughout history, life in this valley has been deeply intertwined with the river. For thousands of years the water of the Rio Grande/ Rio Bravo ran freely through the land we now call El Paso, TX, USA/ Ciudad Juarez, Chih. Mexico supporting a vibrant and unique riparian ecosystem. Today, that same river is almost unrecognizable after it was locked away behind a dam and cement channel then drained and polluted through the industrialization of the border. We’re deeply grateful to still be able to receive and care for this water every year. This is more than just a way to irrigate our plants, it’s our connection to what’s left of the river.

We organize not only for a dignified life for ourselves, but for the right to stay on and care for the land that we call home, and grow the community we imagine which includes the land and all its inhabitants. This is why one of La Mujer Obera’s main priorities is to re-learn our place in the ecosystem, viewing ourselves as part of instead of separate or above the land and those we share the land with. Families of the Barrio Chamizal gather, celebrate, plant and harvest throughout the neighborhood in parks, homes and La Mujer Obrera’s communal spaces to care for and share our knowledge of our urban desert ecosystem.
