You may have noticed we stopped for several hours the night of day 8. After holding onto docks trying to figure out somewhere to stop, asking some people fishing on their dock who said βwe donβt know but good luck.β All we could see was rock retaining walls, paddling straight out into Mobile Bay, battling an incoming tide, the dark, and a straight westerly wind creating 3β + waves and just waiting for a rogue wave to take us down while trying to paddling south we were grateful to land on a tiny bit of sand beneath Nikki and Buddyβs dock. We walked around to their front door to ask if it was alright that we did so, noticing a dog toy in their yard, we hoped was a good omen. They didnβt come out right away but as we started rambling into their ring door camera they finally came out and we were able to explain ourselves and the race. They offered us towels and a Dr Pepper, always good in crisis situations, which we gladly accepted. In the end we decided to stop and wait for the wind to change, as we were pretty solid in our placing at the end of the race. Super grateful and as Nikki asked us to take a picture, she was happy for a story to tell her coworkers the next day. Grateful to jennifer for being on call and picking us up for some shims, ice cream, and a nap. Buddy saw us off the next morning as we paddled off into the sunrise and to finish the race!
Weβd heard the Bay was one of the hardest parts, and we werenβt sure what to expect but the Bay sure showed us πΆ also grateful to Trey, one of our competitors for letting us borrow a slightly more sea-worthy canoe than the one we used most of the race, and if we hadnβt had our tarp deckβ¦ who knows ππ
